Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking a Intermittent Veterinarian Assistant for the Animal Services Division. This position is located in Daytona Beach, Florida, and will be responsible for skilled technical work assisting the Veterinarian in a stationary and mobile spay/neuter clinic. Candidate will be responsible for but not limited to administering medication or vaccines, monitors patients before and after surgery, keep track of all medical records and will train and supervise volunteers. This position serves as key office personnel who interacts on a daily basis with the public (clients as well as pet owners), therefore, having excellent customer service skills is a must.

Illustrative Duties

  • Keeps clear medical records of all animals attended to at the clinic and answers all inquiries made by clients at the front desk.
  • Issues required licenses and tags.
  • Carries out laboratory testing of blood, fecal, urine and other subjects.
  • Ensures that animals are well prepared for surgery and medical examination.
  • Administers medications or vaccines to animals and facilitates dispensing of medication as directed by veterinarian.
  • Ensures that the clinic environment is clean and sanitized, cleans animal cages and sanitizes all surgical tools to prevent contamination.
  • Carefully handles animals during visit to the clinic for testing, injections and other clinical procedures that they may undergo.
  • Makes available drugs prescribed by the veterinarian to the patients and instructs pet owners on how to administer them to their animals at home.
  • Monitors patients before, during, and after surgical procedures to ensure that they are well and reports negative changes observed to the veterinarian.
  • Enlightens and educates pet owners on treatment, surgical procedures and medication for their pets.
  • Ensures that pets are properly fed as instructed by the veterinarian, and keeps their feeding utensils clean to enhance good hygiene.
  • Procures, transports, and unloads supplies and equipment for the clinic. 
  • Trains and supervises volunteers who work in the clinic.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • May be assigned to other locations based upon operational needs.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D. AND two (2) years' experience working in a veterinarian office assisting with animal spay/neuter surgery; OR certification as a veterinary technician.

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of appointment.

Possession of a valid Florida Class B CDL within three (3) months of appointment.

Having met the minimumthe preferred candidate will have at least two (2) years of experience working in a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) clinic environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of proper care and handling of domestic species under stressful situations. 
  • Knowledge of veterinarian medical terms and medications. 
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter environment both in a stationary and mobile clinic environment.
  • Ability to properly handle dogs and cats. 
  • Ability to correctly administer medication as directed. 
  • Ability to keep accurate records and utilize a computer. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations.

ADA REQUIREMENTS :

Physical Demands: Work lifting and/or carrying objects weighing 50 pounds. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle. Hearing, speaking, stooping, kneeling, and reaching, finger dexterity.

Mental Demands: Practical application of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion. Read and understand safety rules, methods and procedures.

Environmental Demands: Mainly inside work.
