General Summary

The research scientist in the Section of Clinical Sciences in the Division of Rheumatology, Inflammation, and Immunity will join Team Sparks and serve as the Director of Data Analytics for the team led by Dr. Jeffrey Sparks. The research scientist will oversee application of data management and statistical analyses, train others, work with internal and external researchers on their projects and contribute to products, e.g., manuscripts, resulting from these projects, as well as support analyses for internal lab projects. The current projects on Team Sparks relate to rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility and outcomes, rheumatic diseases and infection risk and outcomes, and rheumatic complications of immunotherapy for cancer. A variety of data sources are used including secondary analyses of research data, administrative data including electronic health records and pharmacy claims databases, and primary research through observational studies or trials. The types of data to be analyzed include clinical, sociodemographic, environmental, survey, genetics, and biomarkers.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities include working closely with the database programmer in the maintenance of large databases, performing data entry, extracting data from a variety of sources, preparing data for analyses, and assisting with programming requests, validating data, preparing tables and figures for reports, and performing statistical analyses ranging from summary statistics to applying machine learning approaches.

The research scientist will implement a range of statistical analyses and write programs in R, proficiency in using SAS as well as other established programming languages is preferred. The position requires the ability to develop an in-depth understanding of our data and data structures. Willingness to learn new skills and ability to work in a team setting is essential.

The position includes collaborating with external researchers on their projects to determine customization of existing bioinformatics pipelines. They will maintain a data dictionary and metadata and train others on these procedures. The research scientist will over see the development of recording systems assuring that the flow of data is tracked in an accurate and timely fashion.

As the Director of Data Analytics for Team Sparks, the research scientist will develop and establish standards for data management and tracking of analytic datasets. They will oversee implementation all aspects of data management such as database structure, flow of data sharing, and data cleaning procedures. The Director of Data Analytics will lead administrative meetings to review the process and update as necessary. They will also oversee the integration of new data types.

The role includes leading/contributing to grant proposals, manuscripts, publications and abstracts, as well as reports and presentations.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a directly related field, such as biostatistics, statistics or applied mathematics, is required
  • At least two years of work experience is required
  • Experience working with R and SAS programming language is required and essential to the position
  • Experience working in Excel
  • Previous experience in data management and research is preferred

Skills, Abilities, Competencies Required

  • R and SAS programming proficiency is required
  • Data management skills, including the creation, modification and merging of computerized databases in a variety of studies is required
  • Knowledge of computerized data entry programs such as MS Access
  • Knowledge of analytical terminology
  • Must be able to prioritize and organize work responsibilities in order to meet deadlines
  • Must possess a great deal of integrity to maintain confidentiality
  • Must demonstrate accuracy in maintaining data
  • Must be able to make independent judgments under general supervision for the above-mentioned job duties and responsibilities
  • Knowledge of SQL programming languages preferred but not required
  • Experience implementing machine learning algorithms preferred but not required
  • Evidence of potential for scientific creativity, original thought
  • Able to exercise independent judgment and leadership
  • Must have interpersonal skills to interact effectively with persons of all levels
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Major contributor to publications
