The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the flow of surgeries which includes preparing the surgery room with equipment and supplies, ensure pre-operative procedures and tests are conducted, positioning the patient, assist in draping of the patient, coordinating additional patient care services as needed, and assist in sterilizing instruments after use. 
  • Perform the duties of a scrub nurse on various, complex orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures. 
  • Maintain surgical log records and ensure charges are accurate and complete. 
  • Assist the veterinarians in pre operative examinations, treatments and procedures while regularly updating veterinarians with any changes in condition. 
  • Work in Central Sterilization as needed. 
  • Evaluate inventory and restock needed supplies in patient receiving, treatment, operating rooms & general supply areas. 
  • Instruct veterinary students, and occasionally residents, in techniques of small animal restraint and handling, patient monitoring, injections, specimen collection, blood tests, and bandaging techniques. 
  • Communicate regularly with the Team Leader and faculty to potential problems/concerns and answer routine medical questions for clients and students.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Veterinary Technology and 1 to 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Veterinary Technician Licensure or eligible to be licensed in New York State
  • Ability to work weekend and evening shifts. 
  • Excellent communication, team building and organizational skills e
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but are not limited to, prolonged standing and kneeling and lifting and restraining animals that may exceed 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, while demonstrating a high level of initiative. 
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships including communicating with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians and clients in a professional manner at all times.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician with surgical experience
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This specific position will include evening shifts
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

The CUHA provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to insure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception to accommodate work in a hospital that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The schedule for this position may include providing University and calendar holiday coverage on a rotating basis. This position is considered essential and is therefore required to report to work as scheduled during emergency closings. Cross-training with other services to support business continuity will be expected as time/business need allows. If business needs change, a position/individual may be realigned within the CUHA to a different shift or service.
