Applications are invited for a Director of the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) who will also be a professorial level appointment in Biotechnology at the University of Manchester. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research environment at an exciting time to develop the research profile of the university in this important area. This position will also support the future direction of the Biotechnology Research Beacon in the University. The Director role comes with an honorarium of £9k per annum (non-superannuated).

Our vision is to use the breadth of research in biotechnology across the University of Manchester to address the global challenges of clean energy, environmental sustainability, good health, and sustainable manufacturing. Biotechnology research at the University is undertaken in all three Faculties in the University with the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology a cross disciplinary institute at the centre of the beacon.

Founded in 2006 as an interdisciplinary research institute, the MIB is now a world-leading biotechnology research institute with state-of-the-art facilities and a beacon of interdisciplinary and industry-interfaced bioscience that is driving bio-based chemicals synthesis. The institute houses 40 cross-disciplinary research groups with over 140 post-doctoral scientists and 180 postgraduate students. Supported by a portfolio of ca £70M, MIB research is helping to drive the UK’s strategic development of biomanufacturing, specifically in areas of pharmaceuticals, value-added chemicals, advanced materials and next-generation biofuels.
The MIB’s world-leading capabilities include a number of Centres of Excellence: Michael Barber Collaborative Centre for Mass Spectrometry (MBCCMS); Centre of Excellence in Biocatalysis, Biotransformations and Biocatalytic Manufacture (CoEBio3); Centre for Excellence in Biopharmaceuticals (CoEBP); The Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub (Future BRH) and industry interfaced Prosperity Partnerships.
MIB has state-of-the-art research laboratories that house an impressive range of specialist facilities run by dedicated senior technical experts that endow our interdisciplinary investigators with the key skills to work successfully across the discipline interfaces at the forefront of biotechnology (e.g., NMR, EPR, Mass Spectrometry, advanced spectrometry and kinetics platforms). Recent UKRI investments (e.g., Alert bids and Royce institute partnerships) in capital infrastructure are supporting the engineering of biology for chemicals and materials production including high-throughput robotics, gene sequencing, and small-scale fermentation platforms.
The MIB is one of the leading biotechnology research institutes in the world, with a strong industry focus, international profile and globally recognized facilities, outputs and impacts. Reflecting these many achievements, the MIB was awarded the 2019 Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the pioneering expertise in Industrial Biotechnology and biomanufacturing for bio-based chemicals and materials production.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead a significant academic research programme within the remit of the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and will collaborate effectively with other researchers within the Schools, Institutes and further afield in the University. This is a senior appointment in the University and the successful candidate will provide leadership in developing further the research capacity that complements the research activities within the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology as well as the Biotechnology Beacon. As well as providing strong direction in terms of research, the appointee will also help to develop the education profile of the Faculty and expand industrial and international links. The appointee will also perform an important role in mentoring academic staff across the Faculty, particularly early career researchers.
