Control Systems Programmer – Automation Engineer 

The control system programmer develops software supporting new machine control systems, re-programs existing machine control systems, provides input to detailed control system specifications, generates control system documentation, and supports the company’s development of new automation applications.

Functions and Responsibilities

This position is responsible for supporting the design, creation, testing and implementation of software for new and retrofitted equipment control systems. Research new programming architectures and methods as related to industrial automation.

Level 1

  • Program basic control system functions using text-based general purpose language such as C++, Python, or structured text
  • Develops detailed system documentation for software.
  • Assists the Control System Technician in diagnosing control system issues and proposes appropriate solutions
  • Integrate robots and custom motion systems with both PLCs and CNC machines.
  • Support systems both during machine development and in the plant environment.
  • Able to utilize supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for control programs

Level 2

  • Work with the Automation Engineer and the end customer to develop detailed control system functional specification.
  • Architect control system software.
  • Support the creation of project time and effort estimates.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and debug systems in coordination with Control Systems Technicians and Automation Engineers
  • Develop and maintain company’s supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system
  • Knowledge of basic hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic systems as related to control systems and automation.

Level 3

  • Review and approve control system software architecture and coding
  • Implement data analysis and machine learning as part of automated manufacturing systems

Qualifications

Level 1

  • 1-3 years’ experience programming controls for safety critical physical systems (for example, industrial equipment, medical devices, or vehicle electronics)
  • 1-3 years’ experience programming in modern object-oriented languages

Level 2

  • 5-7 years’ experience programming controls for safety critical physical systems (for example, industrial equipment, medical devices, or vehicle electronics)
  • 5-7 years’ experience programming in modern object-oriented languages

Level 3

  • 10+ years’ experience programming controls for safety critical physical systems (for example, industrial equipment, medical devices, or vehicle electronics)
  • 10+ years’ experience programming in modern object-oriented languages

Physical Requirements

Performs physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and frequent movement of the whole body, such as climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, balancing and handling of material.

The wage range for this role considers allowances for a number of factors, including but not limited to required experience, skill level, prior training, licensure/certifications, education and other business needs. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $68,460-$150,255.
