Public Service Journalism Reporter

Lee Enterprises

Omaha, NE
Remote

Lee Enterprises, with 73 news markets across the country, seeks a highly driven investigative and enterprise reporter for its award-winning, national Public Service Journalism Team.

This particular position will be anchored with our nine Nebraska newsrooms, pursuing investigative journalism for our print and digital platforms. Lee’s Nebraska footprint includes readers in Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island, Kearney, York, Columbus, Fremont, North Platte and Scottsbluff.

The Public Service Journalists work individually and also serve as a member of national teams within Lee, producing top-level investigative and enterprise reporting projects. The team members also partner with local Lee newsrooms to explore and investigate issues that impact individual communities.

A candidate for our opening on the Public Service Journalism Team should have significant previous reporting experience and the proven ability to work well in a team environment.

This reporter will take direction from an editor who has decades of investigative reporting and editing experience.

The Public Service Journalist will be a coach and mentor to other Lee journalists, including teaching investigative techniques, one-on-one and in workshop settings, and also mentoring them and consulting on their projects.

Most of the stories produced by the Public Service Journalism Team are investigative or explanatory in nature and take more time to complete than most other news stories, but duties could also include quicker turns, particularly following previously published project work.

Key skill areas for Public Service Team members include but aren’t limited to:

  • Interviewing and source development
  • Research
  • Document analysis
  • FOIA experience and aptitude
  • Data analysis and visualization
  • Coaching and mentoring ability
  • The ability to write crisply and compellingly
  • The ability to accurately and clearly extract and express the most newsworthy elements from documents, interviews and other materials is a must. A solid knowledge of media law is important.
  • The ability to self-edit and edit the work of others
  • Multimedia production and editing skills are helpful.

The Public Service Reporter will cover diverse communities, exposing inequities and exploring issues related to underserved or underrepresented communities.

Preferred candidates will reside in or be willing to relocate to Nebraska.
