Position Overview

SLAC is of the world’s premier science facilities for the Department of Energy. SLAC is located on a 400+ acre Stanford site with 200 buildings and structures, totaling two million square feet of scientific research and experimental buildings, laboratories, clean rooms, light fabrication, office, and meeting room spaces. Reporting to the Associate Director of Facilities Management and Planning, the Sr. Manager of Space an Logistics is a department manager responsible for space at SLAC. This includes development of space standards/policy, space master planning, and site master planning with collaboration with Stanford University in collaboration with the Lab’s Director’s Office, SLAC’s Office of Strategic Planning, and SLAC Campus Planning.

A primary responsibility of Space Management is to collaborate with construction and operational stakeholders (mission support divisions or lab directorates) to understand evolving mission needs and operations. This must guide space programming and policy, resulting in adjudication of moves for SLAC to meet its strategic and mission objectives. Space Management chairs the lab’s Space Committee under the authority of the Lab Director. This is a collaborative role with Lab leadership, scientific programs, and mission support. You will also contribute with long-range planning for the Lab, including collaboration with other DOE Labs and Stanford Land Building and Real Estate (LBRE), as appropriate.

Logistics Management looks at the evolving mission needs and planned construction, and is charged with the lab’s distribution, movement, and supply storage. Logistics Management works with stakeholders, Facility Management, and Supply Chain to ensure the site remains coordinated and functional.

Transition to Operations (TTO) is the Lab’s process of project handoff for facilities and infrastructure projects. As manager of TTO this position is responsible for acceptance of the organization of construction from internal project management. This includes ensuring stakeholder requirements are met and accepted by the stakeholder, sign off/acceptance of Building Management, and warranty/training hand off to Operations.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage team of Space Planners providing successful customer service for lab-wide space planning, furniture reconfigurations, staff move management, and logistical execution of space changes related to master site planning. Types of space include office, open work areas, collaborative, laboratory (dry and wet), scientific specialty process, industrial, storage and outdoor areas.
  • Ensure ADA/ABA compliance and compliance of SLAC space standards for both existing spaces and planned moves.
  • Plan and coordinate staff/lab moves, competing construction needs, and evolving mission needs.
  • Integrate with Construction/Project Management to ensure conflicts with other projects and lab operations are minimized.
  • Serve as Liaison (either directly or through delegation to subordinates) between Projects and Operations/Mission Directorates as TTO Manager.
  • Plan/track multi-years programming requirements for Space.
  • Maintaining partnerships with stakeholders, contribute to the global Lab strategy for space programming with effective solutions for competing space needs and logistical implementation of solutions.
  • Plan and execute movement of equipment, clearing and cleanup of spaces, modular furniture system installations, reconfigurations of furniture/spaces, reorganization of storage/warehousing, and procurement and coordination of outside sub-contractors/vendors.
  • Maintain data and systems for managing SLAC space including implementation of a new space utilization tracking tool, maintenance of existing Building Data Base and GIS Space tracking systems; analyze data and report on space usage type, occupancy, utilization, space changes, and new space requests.
  • Utilize GANT timelines, space programming floor plans, feasibility studies, utilization data, stacking /blocking diagrams, and furniture design solutions.
  • Develop/review/maintain policies and procedures related to space management, space utilization policy, and ergonomic furniture standards.
  • Participate in annual and multiyear project prioritization, planning, and funding; lead department/unit strategic management; may lead planning in some areas or segments; develop and review recommendations regarding short-term and long-range programs and projects, long-range financial and programmatic planning, and development.
  • Develop and manage budget(s) for Space Management, Logistics, and TTO

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or other appropriate technical area, or combination of technical education, training, and experience. Five or more years of extensive relevant professional and managerial experience in an environment with a variety of building types (administrative offices, classrooms, laboratories, residential & dining facilities, auditoriums, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.
  • Proficiency with standard desktop applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. CAD design is a beneficial skillset.
  • Technical knowledge of best practices in facilities management discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets and procurement of services.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, developing, and implementing programs.
  • Demonstrated experience understanding and applying relevant codes, regulations, and processes.

The expected pay range for this position is $142,000 - $194,000. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
