Power, Natural Gas, Coal and Carbon Research (previously Point Carbon, Thomson Reuters, Refinitiv), part of Commodity Research at LSEG, has a strong footprint in the commodity community. We have been in the business of Renewables, Power and Carbon markets since 1998. Oslo is our biggest location for Power and Carbon Research; however, Commodity Research is comprised of analysts located in London, Houston, Chicago, Singapore, Beijing, Gdynia, Tokyo, Lund and Sao Paulo.

Energy transition and zero emission policies increase the demand for our services in trading analytics and sustainable finance, and we are now expanding our teams in Oslo and Houston.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Weather forecasts are part of our key deliveries in the Power product. Our clients want the fastest and most accurate modeling and forecasting of renewables. We want an experienced quantitative meteorologist to drive this further in a world of AI weather forecasting. The successful candidate will have strong analytical and quantitative skills. The analyst will have high attention to detail, possess excellent communication skills, and be self-motivated, inquisitive, resourceful, and independent.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and improve quantitative models, including data handling and data processing. This includes modeling and forecasting renewables using existing and new weather forecasts.
  • Write analysis and reports to support traders and market participants.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Higher education (MSc or PhD level) in meteorology, atmospheric physics, industrial mathematics, computer science / artificial intelligence, economics, engineering, or equivalent.
  • Good proficiency in data analysis and predictive modelling, particularly in the fields of meteorology and weather forecasting.
  • Strong knowledge in computer programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R) for processing weather data and model development.
  • Good understanding of climate models and developments in the field. 
  • Solid background in statistics and machine learning techniques, especially applied to meteorological data.
  • Familiarity with power system modelling and understanding the impact of weather on energy dynamics.
  • Capability to integrate weather data into power system models. 
  • Effective data visualization skills for timeseries and geospatial data. 
  • Good communication skills for effective interdisciplinary collaboration.
