What You Will Do:

Gannett Fleming is looking for a Regional Traffic Management (TMC) Center Systems Operator I in the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Region 3 office located in Syracuse, NY. With unique growth opportunities, this may be the opportunity for you!

As a TMC Systems Operator, you will be responsible for Traffic Operations situational awareness, data entry and monitoring of systems within region 3 counties and roadway for normal and emergency conditions. This will require you to identify incidents, coordinating responses using various cutting-edge software technology tools and ultramodern traffic monitoring equipment, (CCTV and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)) as well as live/continuously updating of web-based applications, and NYSDOT personnel & consultant managers.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Call-taking and data entry into various computer logs and record keeping software using Microsoft applications (SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Monitoring traffic cameras installed along the road network for declaring and responding to traffic incidents in a timely manner.
  • Deploy messaging and monitor VMS (Virtual Message System) boards.
  • Dispatching NYSDOT help truck crews for routine and emergency traffic situations.
  • Monitor & report over-height vehicle detection alerts, construction work zones and roadway closures.
  • Dispatch & report traffic signals malfunctions and highway maintenance calls.
  • Monitor & enter information into web-based traffic information systems and mapping sites for travel convenience and alerts.
  • Pro-actively monitor "hotspots", work zones, motor vehicle accidents, weather conditions, and special events.
  • Perform record keeping tasks, computer entries, complete daily reports and quality control/assurance checks.
  • Other duties as necessary.

Education | Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required:
  • Military veterans welcome
  • Preferred – An associate degree, or equivalent of 2 years’ experience in; Customer service or support, military service, public safety (911/Police/Fire-Rescue or similar), emergency management, transportation dispatch, surveillance or similar environments.
  • Must have an aptitude for providing exceptional customer service, interpersonal relationships, and ability to work well within a diverse group.
  • Capacity to clearly communicate written and verbal information in English.
  • Ability to take calls, dispatch (via radio or telephone) and communicate in a clear, calm, and detailed manner.
  • Ability to coordinate real-time activities and priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Possess strong knowledge of region 3 roadways.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to use computers in “Windows Office Suite” and other web applications and completing clear and detailed written reports using effortless keyboarding skills.
  • Adherence to company code of conduct and policies & procedures.
  • Willing to work all shifts including weekends, overnights and holidays and be on-call if necessary.
  • Must possess reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and a strong work ethic.
  • Must complete the probationary training period.

Core Business Hours:

Full-Time: Shifts are days, afternoons, and overnights- hours vary;

Part-Time: Weekends shifts are days and overnights (full benefits available for part-timers)

Salary Range: $40,560 - $42,640 a year starting; Salary dependent upon experience and education. (Incremental pay increases upon successful completion of training, with possibility of further

promotion and pay increase within 1st year of employment.)
