POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the Academic Resource Center Director (Interim Senior Director of Academic Programs) in the division of Enrollment Management, the Deputy Director of First Year Initiative (FYI) will be responsible for the administration of Lehman College’s first year learning community. In that role, the Deputy Director implements initiatives and programming that support students’ development and successful transition into college.

The Deputy Director of First Year Program oversees the administration of Lehman College’s first year learning community through engagement in key areas: Learning Community/Course Blocks; Faculty Development and Assessment; and Retention.

  • The Deputy Director is responsible for the development of innovative programs that promote students' academic success, engagement and retention, as well as help FYI meet college and university goals for student retention, and persistence.
  • The Deputy Director will have oversight of the implementation of special courses offered in first year blocks, and for managing the hiring and administration of the LEH 250 first-year seminar.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Undergraduate Advisement to help first year students understand Lehman’s advising structure and registration processes.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to offer faculty development that focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty teaching LEH 250, English Composition, and other first year courses, as well as understanding the needs of multilingual students.
  • Collaborate work with the division of Student Affairs to encourage student participation in new student orientation programs and onboarding activities.
  • Partners with the College’s Office of Student Success, and grant funded programs serving first year students, to support academic early alert initiatives that identify academically vulnerable students and assist with providing appropriate support and resources.
  • Develops and implements interventions for at-risk students in collaboration with academic support services programs on campus.
  • Develops summer bridge programs to assist students in passing gateway courses and learn skills necessary for first year success.
  • Participates in various admissions, recruitment, and new student onboarding events throughout the year.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.

Master's degree in higher education, student affairs or related field or PhD in these fields or Education, Counseling preferred.

Minimum six years of experience in a college setting working with diverse first year and first-generation college students.

Demonstrated record of success with first year initiatives and learning communities.

Knowledge of current research and best practices on supporting first year students as well as experience with collecting and analyzing data around student learning outcomes and program success preferred.

Experience building partnerships across divisions, including with advising, academic support, counseling, financial aid, bursars, and special programs.

Supervisory experience also required.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on time sensitive projects.

Experience using student CUNYFIRST, EAB Navigate, Microsoft Office, Brightspace/D2L or other student learning management systems, as well as assessment software.

Some evenings and/or weekends may be required.

  • Plans and executes workshops, orientation sessions, and events to acquaint students with enrollment processes
  • Reviews and approves content for print and on-line enrollment materials
  • Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management
  • May manage professional and/or clerical staff as well as department budget
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Salary commensurate with education and experience, $96,602 - 104,057.
