Job Summary:

Louisiana State University Textile, Apparel Design and Merchandising (TAM) department seeks a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track Instructor/Assistant Curator (60% instruction/40% curator). This individual works collaboratively with the Director and Curator of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum (TCM) to collect, preserve, interpret, and present the museum’s holdings in various ways. The individual will hold a 100% appointment with Louisiana State University A&M. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024.

60% - Instructor

  • Teach undergraduate courses that may include but are not limited to fashion trend forecasting, fashion and society, history of fashion, history of textiles, Queer fashion, textile science (lecture and/or labs), and apparel quality.
  • Engage students in varied and creative ways with collection.
  • Present course concepts in an innovative, engaging, and inclusive manner encompassing group work, critical thinking, writing, and industry-based case studies or projects.
  • May supervise undergraduate or graduate students' independent studies and/or honors students interested in fashion/dress/textile history or museum work. 

40% - Assistant Curator

  • Work collaboratively with the Director and Curator of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum (TCM) to collect, preserve, interpret, and present the museum’s holdings in various ways. 
  • Manage the collection's holdings under the guidance of the Director and Curator.
  • Cultivate donor relations, respond to loan requests and research inquiries, sit on committees that create and maintain policies and procedures, create or contribute work to a rotating schedule of exhibitions (at least two exhibitions per calendar year), conduct regular conservation assessments and measures, and maintain accurate and detailed accession records to document and make available to researchers, faculty, and students the breadth and depth of our holdings.
  • Support the research efforts of students and faculty interested in using material culture as primary source material and help faculty with object-based pedagogy. 
  • Nurture and develop our long-standing relationship with our community support group, the Friends of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum, and will work with TAM support staff to coordinate events, including annual meetings, fundraisers, and exhibition openings. Work with TAM support staff and the LSU Foundation to accurately track and recognize monetary donations. Work with various campus, community, and professional partners to enact the mission of TCM and mentor and manage graduate and undergraduate student-workers.
  • Support the Curator’s efforts related to research, publication, and grantsmanship as part of the mission to elevate the prominence of TCM as we disseminate knowledge and seek external funding. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters Degree in Dress History, Museum Studies or related area

Specific Experience: Foundational knowledge of Textiles, Apparel Design, and Merchandising as demonstrated by completed coursework in the discipline and/or other professional work experience. Experience with fashion/textile collection management and exhibition.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in dress history, museum studies, or related areas.

Specific Experience: An established college-level teaching record as a graduate student, instructor, or above with evidence of teaching excellence. Demonstrated ability to teach various courses within the TAM curriculum; active membership in professional organizations related to dress history or museum work; experience with grant writing; record of research publication related to fashion/dress/textile history; and experience with social media content creation and management. 

Additional Information: May be required to drive a vehicle. Limited exposure to minors, but minors do attend opening events and tour exhibitions. Must have the ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs without restrictions. Periods of long standing, ability to climb a ladder safely carrying up to 15 lbs. Responsibilities occasionally require crawling into small spaces to install exhibitions, adjust mannequin placement. A pre-employment physical will be required.

Vehicle Operation - University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

Cash Handling - This position has access to/directly handles cash. Financial history/credit check required per FASOP HR-04.

Minor Contact - This position and/or position's responsibilities require work directly with minors. Finger printing and National Sex Offender Registry check required per FASOP HR-04.

FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.

The Department:

The graduate program offers both a thesis and non-thesis Master of Science Degree and a Ph.D. with concentrations in Textile Science, Historic/Cultural, Apparel Design, and Merchandising. The department is a valued part of the College of Agriculture. TAM averages 200 majors and 50 minors, with a departmental student retention rate that is the highest in the college and the second highest in the university.

TCM Mission:

The museum’s primary mission is to preserve fashion and textile artifacts according to four priorities: American fashion; woman fashion designers; LSU histories, and Louisiana histories. TCM also endeavors to collect and curate from an inclusive and intersectional perspective to represent diverse cultural and social histories. We support and enrich the academic programs of both TAM and the greater LSU community. TAM/TCM offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in historical/cultural aspects of dress. As such, we train future academics, researchers, and museum professionals to pursue engaging careers related to the comprehensive history and culture of fashion and textiles.
