Job Description Summary:

The physician extender nurse will assist the physicians with hospital based consults and admissions. RN will function within scope of practice. Responsible for being point of contact for emergency department when patient admissions or consults are required. Will work closely with Jackson Surgical Vascular Surgeons with documenting care in the patient’s medical record under the direction of the medical provider. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Point of contact for emergency department for admissions and consultations. Liaison between ER physicians and Jackson Surgical Vascular Surgeons. Assist physician with patient consults and admissions by obtaining information from patient and/or patient records to assist with information with plan of care. Coordinates and performs beside care of patients; performs, assist, or delegates with skilled procedures. Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision. Informs physician of patient’s arrival, general condition, and pertinent physical and emotional findings, and assist the physician with treatments, examinations, and/or patient rounds when indicated. Records progress of patient on progress notes which will be countersigned by the physician. May accept verbal orders from the physician, recording and then reading back to the physician for confirmation. Appropriately prioritizes physician’s orders. Contributes to the development, implementation of the patient care plan. Receives calls from floor RN’s for Jackson Surgical Vascular Surgeons. Assist physicians with procedures or examinations if requested and within scope of practice. Communicates with patient and his/her family and collaborates with other disciplines for providing emotional support, teaching, and discharge planning. Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of Associate degree in Nursing required, BSN preferred.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Education requirements as stated above.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
  • Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.
  • In Critical Care areas, ACLS certification must be kept current. In other areas, ACLS is preferred.
  • Additional certifications may be required at department discretion.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in the ability to demonstrate skills according to current system policies and procedures.
  • Skills and proficiency in area of chart review for appropriate utilization of resources and quality of care issues. Prefer but not required, candidate with physician extender experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the nursing profession as normally acquired through the completion of a diploma, associates, or baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of the hospital and completion of skills check sheet for designated areas as acquired through 3 month probationary period.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

INTERPERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Interpersonal skill and frequent interaction with patients and personnel. Ability to work hamoniously with others sufficiently to convince the system that all patients treated by the indivual will receive quality care and that the system will be able to operate in an orderly manner.
  • Communication skills needed for frequent contact with unit staff, medical staff, and other hospital departments to exchange information regarding patient care.
  • Uses proper channels of communication.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Follows chain of command will report to the physicians and to clinic manager.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking on a continuous basis.
  • Ability to perform occasional lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling or crouching.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Possible exposure to odors, biological, mechanical, electrical, chemical, wray, and later products.
