The Department of History at the University of South Dakota seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin fall semester 2024, with a specialization in world or global history prior to 1600. Specializations in African, Asian, Latin American or Oceana are welcome. Teaching areas will include World History and undergraduate and graduate courses. This is a 9-month, full-time, benefit eligible position within the Department of History. The Department of History offers a B.A., B.S. and M.A. in History. The Department also houses the Native American Studies and Philosophy majors, and minors in Religious Studies, Classical Humanities, and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in World Civilizations, the History methods capstone course, electives in the applicant’s areas of expertise, interdisciplinary cross-listed courses, and in the University Honors program as assigned. The position carries a 3-3 teaching load.
  • Periodically teach graduate seminars, serve on graduate committees and University Honors thesis committees.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; teach Independent Studies as needed.
  • Develop a research program which includes peer-reviewed publication.
  • Participate in Departmental, College, and University service; participate in professional service and outreach activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in History by first day of employment (August 2024);
  • Ability to teach introductory, advanced undergraduate, and graduate courses in History;
  • Ability to develop an independent research program;
  • Potential to publish the results of original research in peer-reviewed venues;
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
