The Department of Psychology, Wayne State University, seeks to hire an Assistant Professor – Clinical (Non-Tenure Track) to serve as Associate Director for our Psychology Training Clinic, which supports our APA-accredited scientist-practitioner Clinical Psychology Training Program.

This is a non-tenure track, full-time 12 month position. We expect to hire at the Assistant Professor – Clinical rank. However, exceptional candidates may be considered at the rank of Associate Professor – Clinical, with rank dependent on years of experience and demonstrated success in training, supervision, and teaching. 

Our program has about 50 Ph.D. students in residence annually, and the training clinic provides for required and elective practical experiences in empirically based a) psychological assessment, b) psychotherapy and allied interventions, c) supervision training, and d) consultation regarding assessment and treatment of child, couple, family, individual, group, and community interventions.

In a typical year, the clinic serves more than 250 clients from an ethnically and economically diverse, urban population that has a wide range of moderate to severe mental health diagnoses, substance abuse problems, disabilities, and chronic health problems. The Clinic has a licensed faculty member who serves as Director, an additional half-time non-tenure track faculty member, a part-time secretary/receptionist, and graduate teaching assistants.

The Assistant Professor – Clinical position is a non-tenure track, contractual, 12-month position, for at least one year, with subsequent years possible, contingent upon acceptable performance.

  • Assist the Clinic Director in day-to-day operations of the training program including planning for, oversight of, and reporting on aspects of clinical operations (intakes, assessments, therapy, and consultation) and administrative systems (e.g., electronic medical records, billing and communication systems).
  • Provide supervision to practicum students who are conducting assessments, psychotherapy, and consultation.
  • Teach one or more clinical courses such as practicum courses in assessment, intervention, and/or supervision.
  • Contribute to applications for federal, private, and community grants and contracts.
  • Assist in coordinating and supervising groups in the Clinic.

Qualifications:

As Associate Director, the Assistant Professor – Clinical will:

  • Participate in ongoing functions of the clinical psychology Ph.D. program, including admissions, annual reviews, doctoral qualifying exams, program faculty meetings, guest lectures, and occasional thesis and dissertation committees.
  • If licensed, conduct psychological assessments and psychotherapy for Clinic clients (optional).

The following qualifications are highly desired in applicants:

  • A Ph.D. or PsyD. and completed predoctoral internship from an APA-accredited clinical psychology program (required)
  • Licensed in Michigan or another state; if not licensed, then license-eligible in Michigan or willing to become licensed within 1 year, with supervision provided by Clinic faculty.
  • Familiarity with management of a training clinic, a community-based clinical mental health clinic, or another similar setting.
  • Skills in assessment (psycho-educational, neuropsychological, and/or personality).
  • Skills in pragmatic, empirically-supported treatments for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Interest in supervising trainees, managing organizations, and collaborating with community partners.
  • Competence in rapid responding to serious clinical issues (e.g., suicidal or violent behavior).
  • Interest in providing training and supervision in Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with an ethnically, economically, developmentally, sexually, and religiously diverse population, including persons with disability, persons with chronic illnesses, and military personnel.
