Construction Materials Technician

S&ME is seeking an individual to join our Construction Services team in Raleigh, NC as a Construction Materials Technician and help us provide engineering solutions to our clients.

What You Will Do:

As a Construction Materials Technician, you will have a company vehicle to perform the field testing and observations of construction materials on project sites. These tests you perform each day help ensure compliance with industry standards and project specifications. You will see construction projects from beginning to end, documenting the successful placement and use of soil, concrete, rebar, asphalt, aggregate, and other building materials. It is our job to make sure it is "built right", and at S&ME we take that responsibility very seriously. You will have the opportunity to obtain additional certifications to help you advance in your career, perform more complex testing taking on more responsibilities and mentoring younger technicians. • Working outside making an impact on the community around you by conducting field testing of construction materials (soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, etc.) to ensure compliance with industry standards and/or project specifications
• Opportunity to learn each day on a variety of high profile and exciting projects across the construction industry
• Impacting each office by performing testing that contributes to our company's success
• Reviewing plans and specifications in preparation of field observations on construction sites.
• Documenting field activities, observations, and testing results on projects.
• Daily use of Metafield®, and/or other field and laboratory information management system.
• Calibrating field and laboratory equipment to industry codes and standards.
• Communicating with management staff, general contractors, and clients.

Who You Are:

• You have a high school diploma/ GED
• You have 2+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials or equivalent experience and an associate degree in a related field
• You have effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
• Any of the following certifications are a plus:
• American Concrete Institute (ACI):
• Field Testing Grade I
• Strength Testing Technician
• Laboratory Technician
• International Code Council (ICC)
• Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils).
• DOT Certifications in the fields of Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

• Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
• Walking over rough and uneven terrain
• Standing up to 8 hours a day, up to 12 hours on occasion
• Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
• Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
• Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
• Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
