POSITION TITLE: Upward Bound Teacher Assistant & Tutor (temporary)

Summary of Position

The Mills College at Northeastern University Upward Bound (MCUB) TRIO Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. MCUB is designed to enhance the academic skills of low-income first-generation college-bound high school students in the Oakland and West Contra Costa Unified School District with the goal that participants will pursue post-secondary education. TRiO is funded by the U. S. Department of Education. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English, Sciences, and Mathematics. MCUB will also provide courses and workshops exploring various topics: Life Skills, Study Skills, College Preparation, Career Exploration, and Cultural Awareness. 

Summer Enrichment Program Description 

The MCUB Program offers a six-week summer academic enrichment program for students entering grades 9th-12th. The MCUB summer program will be conducted on the Mills College Campus. Staff orientations will likely take place June 4th – 5th 10:30 am to 4 pm. Instruction for the MCUB Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 17th and continues through Thursday, July 25th. The daily program schedule is 9:00 am-5:00pm, Monday–Friday (7 hours Monday-Thursday and on Fridays, hours may be more depending on our departure and return from field trips). An hour nonpaid lunch from 11:00 to 12:00 pm is included in the 9 am – 5 pm program schedule above. 

The Mills College at Northeastern University Upward Bound (MCUB) TRIO Program is currently seeking 4-6 highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced educators to assist instructors and tutor students in academic courses in ENGL 1A, Introduction to Speech-COMM 1A, Introduction to Statistics - MATH 13, CIS - Introduction to Computer Programming, English for 9th graders, Chemistry, Algebra/Geometry, Robotics/Algebra 2, Robotics/Coding, Robotics/Physics, and/or Physics/Algebra 2. Courses will be taught to students in high school students in rising 9th-12th grades. The positions require someone who has passion, innovation, and knowledge to motivate and challenge students to generate skills necessary for college success. 

Each course will be defined by: 

  • Small classes (up to 20 students) 
  • Daily in-class instruction, group work, real-world application of concepts taught. 

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Entering weekly grades 
  • Entering daily attendance 
  • Support students with work completion 
  • Student lunch time supervision 
  • Prep materials for instructors 
  • Supervise students on weekly field trips 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support of MCUB mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior 
  • Participate in MCUB weekly staff meetings. 
  • Attend instructor orientation/planning sessions and program activities. 
  • Prepare students for End of Summer Showcase: An opportunity for all students to show what they learned during the summer. (July 18th, 5pm-8pm)   

Knowledge of: 

  • Thorough knowledge of subject matter and skill acquisition in subject being taught 
  • Knowledgeable of California Content standards for subject area (academic courses) 
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles 

Skills/Abilities: 

  • Skills and knowledge to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds 
  • Ability to understand and enforce all MCUB Program policies 

Education and Training: 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Preferred candidate holds Teaching Credential or working towards Teaching Credential. 
  • Minimum 2 years experience teaching in related subject. 
  • Minimum 2 years direct working relationship/or teaching low-income, first-generation college-bound students. 
  • Strong preference given to Oakland Unified School District teachers. 

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands: 

  • Requires passing fingerprinting and a background check. 
  • Requires certificate of completion of Mandated Reporting Training within the last year.
