Other Conditions

Extramural funds. Appointment to begin approximately February 2024 or soon thereafter, continuation dependent on satisfactory performance and renewal of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigators (PIs), serve as a STEM Specialist & Community Coordinator for extramurally funded project(s) related to improving STEM education for Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Island PreK-5 students with and without disabilities.
  • Develop, implement, and assess culturally responsive STEM curriculum and activities that contribute to best practices in the field.
  • Review, refine and copy edit existing project developed lessons, activities and other programming.
  • Develop, lead/co-lead and teach math and science workshops, training and programs to teachers, parents and other community members.
  • Develop and implement recruitment programs and activities for schools, students and parents, and mentors.
  • Work with partner and contracted organizations to plan and carry out STEM enrichment summer camps and STEM-focused community service learning events.
  • Participate in evaluation activities and data collection.
  • Maintain a research/scholarly profile related to STEM and community work as a profession.
  • Contribute to the department, university, profession and community through serving on committees, volunteering as a journal reviewer, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Junior Specialist Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in STEM fields, STEM Education, Special Education, or related field from a college or university of recognized standing.
  2. Experience developing hands-on STEM lessons, activities, or curriculum for a wide range of audiences including elementary school students with and without disabilities.
  3. Experience conducting STEM activities within school, afterschool, or community center setting.
  4. Experience teaching/tutoring STEM activities to students who are from underrepresented minority groups.
  5. Experience working with students with disabilities and diverse needs.
  6. Experience coordinating a group of diverse people for meetings, collaborative work, or other activities.
  7. Basic understanding of educational or social science research practices pertaining to research implementation, data collection and dissemination.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work independently on assigned tasks, prioritize tasks, and see tasks through completion.
  9. Ability to travel independently to various geographical site/school locations in a timely manner and work on some weekends for project-related activities.

Assistant Specialist Minimum Qualifications

[In addition to the Junior Specialist Minimum Qualifications]

  1. 30 credits beyond Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in the STEM field, STEM Education, Special Education, or related field.
  2. At least three (3) years of experience in teaching students STEM lessons and/or activities at the Junior Specialist level or equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated experience in planning, organizing, and implementing face-to-face and online professional development/workshops for tutors/mentors, teachers and/or parents.
  2. Demonstrated teaching experience of elementary grade level students with disabilities or those who are struggling learners.
  3. Experience teaching or conducting outreach STEM activities to Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
  4. Experience differentiating activities to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  5. Course work in or solid understanding of Hawaiian history, culture, and language.
  6. Familiarity and experience in collaborating with Schools and Native Hawaiian organizations in Hawaii.
  7. Demonstrated understanding and application of effective math and science teaching/engagement strategies beyond the classroom.
  8. Familiarity with computer science lessons.
  9. Experience in writing technical reports, journal articles, and competitive grant applications.
