The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Chair or Co-Chairs of the CGT, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the management of the Committee on Global Thought (CGT) and acts as a senior advisor to leadership for CGT’s long-term development. The position entails supervision and oversight of the core team that is responsible for program development, a growing MA program, alumni initiatives, public relations and outreach, signature research projects, budget and grant management, and the execution of public programs. 

Responsibilities

  • The Executive Director develops long- and short-term strategic plan and its implementation for the Committee in conjunction with its Chair, Executive Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and other staff.
  • The Executive Director collaborates regularly with other constituencies within Columbia Global, including Columbia World Projects, the Columbia Global Centers, and the Institute for Ideas and Imagination.
  • With input from the Chair, the Development Committee, and development officers of the University, the incumbent also develops, and initiates fundraising strategies and events, identifies funding sources, and develops relationships to create and increase donation opportunities for the CGT. The cultivation of new members for the Advisory Council and managing relationships with Council members is high on the priority list. Development and management of grant proposals for submission to foundations is an integral part of the responsibilities. 
  • The Executive Director develops and maintains internal and external budgets and expense reports and serves as primary liaison with funding agency officers and evaluators. This includes managing the annual budget for the Committee, generating monthly accounting statements, periodic and annual financial and narrative reports for various purposes, day-to-day correspondence with high level internal and external contacts including but not limited to foundation officers, University administration, and distinguished visiting scholars from around the world.
  • The incumbent conceives, with input from the Executive Committee, all aspects of public and academic programs. This includes guiding the public relations and outreach strategies of the CGT’s programs both within and outside the university; communicating program objectives and information to administrators, departments, programs, and units across the university; and disseminating program materials to the Columbia University community, other colleges, universities, nationally, and internationally. The incumbent also serves as the publisher of the Committee’s Annual Report.
  • The Executive Director leads the human resources operations of the CGT, in consultation with the Executive Committee, which includes the human resources processes and obligations of the CGT such as hiring, training, and evaluation of all officers of administration including regular, part-time and temporary program officers, as well as student interns and student work-study employees.
  • The Executive Director oversees and provides strategic guidance on the implementation of the CGT’s academic programs, including the M.A. in Global Thought, a blended certificate, and an undergraduate curriculum, including but not limited to the recruitment and appointment of full-time and part-time faculty and research scholars, as well as the administration of stipends and fellowships to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • The Executive Director performs other duties as requested by the Chair and the Executive Committee. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree is usually required or strongly desirable
  • 7 to 9 years of related experience Type minimum qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required with 7 years of related experience
  • Grant writing experience 
  • Project management experience
  • Experience supervising administrative staff
  • Knowledge of Columbia’s accounting and reporting systems
  • Experience with financial management and event planning
