The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban planning. Located within HPS, the Department of Emergency Management and Disaster Science offers the nation’s first bachelor’s degree program in Emergency Administration and Planning and a master’s degree in Emergency Management and Disaster Science. With eight faculty and one staff member, the department aims to advance disaster science and practice through high quality collaborative research, an evidence-based curriculum, and meaningful engagement with the scholarly and practitioner communities.
UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.
Position Summary
As a part of a project funded by the Joint Fire Science Program, the principal investigator seeks a full-time, motivated post-doctoral researcher to coordinate qualitative data analysis and stakeholder engagement activities for a research project on wildfire recovery. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary research team from the University of North Texas, USDA Forest Service, and the University of California Berkeley. We offer a flexible start in summer or fall 2024. Funding includes full-time salary and benefits for up to 16 months.
Using a coupled social-ecological approach, this research seeks to understand how post-wildfire recovery and mitigation alters future wildfire vulnerability. The successful candidate will take a leadership role in analysis of stakeholder interviews and inventory of post-fire programs and outcomes in two counties in northern California (Lake & Sonoma Counties). Qualitative data on risk reduction programs and geospatial wildfire risk modeling outputs will inform the incumbent’s work engaging with community stakeholders and creating tangible, written, and visual research products.
