Description

The Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) is accountable for facilitating excellence in patient care delivery, providing operating efficiencies, and insuring compliance with hospital and regulatory policies and practices. She/he directs and evaluates all staff within the Clinical Service. The Clinical Nurse Manager manages patient flow and the efficient use of human, fiscal, and environmental resources. The CNM serves as a nursing resource and role model for the nursing, technical, and support staff. She/he establishes effective collaborative relations with other members of the health care teams and support service staff. She/he collaborates with CSS, Materials Management, Building Supplies, Biomedical Engineering, and all other support services to ensure that the Operating Room is equipped, supplied, and properly prepared for patients, anesthesiologists and surgeons. The CNM participates in hospital and unit-based quality improvement activities, particularly as they relate to patients in their designated service.

The CNM works collaboratively with the Nurse Practice Specialists and Staff Development team to lead staff development opportunities for operating room staff members.

  1. Collaborates with other CNMs to promote consistency within the operating rooms, including organization of supplies and equipment within the rooms, the application of policies and procedures, and staff development opportunities.
  2. Manages turnover time collaboratively with surgeon and anesthesia colleagues. 
  3. Manages first case start times collaboratively with surgeon and anesthesia colleagues. 
  4. Collaborates with Sterile Processing Department and Materials Management Leaders in assuring adequate supplies and equipment inventory.
  5. Takes appropriate action to adjust work schedules to meet volume, technology, and staff needs.
  6. Interviews and hires candidates and OR staff seeking placement within the clinical service.
  7. Collaborates with the nursing leadership of the preoperative and postoperative units involved with surgical patients to promote smooth transitions between the OR and these units and work collaboratively to problem solve issues. 

Leadership

  1. Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration through effective communications and negotiations.
  2. Interprets and communicates to staff members all changes in standards of care, nursing practice activities, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  3. Investigates incidents, patient and staff safety concerns and/or complaints and initiates action, working with the Nurse Director as appropriate for problem solving.
  4. Communicates and documents pertinent incidents, actions, and follow-up to the Nurse Director in a timely manner.
  5. Coordinates problem-solving activities with the staff and arranges meetings as needed.
  6. Conducts clinical service meetings at least monthly.
  7. Conducts annual performance appraisals for staff assigned to clinical service, with input from colleagues.
  8. Participates in operating room staff meetings and disseminates appropriate information to staff assigned to clinical service.
  9. Participates in quality improvement activities within the operating room and the clinical service.
  10. Fosters an environment where interdisciplinary collaboration related to patient care needs are paramount.
  11. Ensures a practice environment that maintains high professional standards of clinical care and conduct.

Professional Development

  1. Works with the OR Nursing Leadership Group to ensure that staff achieve competency in generic and specialty knowledge skills.
  2. Participates in competency-based orientation for all new staff.
  3. Provides support to preceptors.
  4. Evaluates effectiveness of orientation program
  5. Promotes professional development of staff through the Recognition and Clinical Advancement Program and other appropriate mechanisms.
  6. Assists the Nurse Practice Specialists and Staff Development team to coordinate student assignments and evaluate student performances while in the clinical service.
  7. Applies knowledge of current and relevant issues and changes in nursing, social and medical science to improve patient care and foster staff development.
  8. Participates in and promotes professional research.
  9. Performs other related duties as directed.

Qualifications

Education

Current Massachusetts Nursing License required.

Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. If bachelor's degree is not in nursing and a higher degree has been obtained, that higher degree must be in nursing. CNOR preferred, master's degree required.

Experience

3-5 years nursing experience in an Operating Room, with demonstrated clinical competence and professional accountability

1-2 years of managerial experience desirable
