Talent Development

  • Participate in the identification and hiring of underwriting talent onto the local team across MPL, Media & Tech & Cyber teams as needed
  • Lead, develop and manage a team of high-performing Field Underwriters across MPL, Media & Tech & Cyber product lines, and focusing their efforts to achieve growth and profitability goals
  • Coach and mentor underwriters, modelling desired behaviors to elevated performance, upskill talent as necessary

Profitable Growth

  • Working closely with our product leaders to drive strategy
  • Execute regional plans for MPL, Media & Tech & Cyber practice areas: execute marketing initiatives, actively manage broker relationships at the practice lead level, individual underwriter and team lead level, drive new business growth activity, and meet/exceed national budget expectations
  • Play a key role in how the regional/office plan will be executed i.e. steering the underwriters towards the most profitable submissions and managing messaging to brokers to emphasize in appetite submissions
  • Obtain senior level underwriting authority in MPL, Media & Tech & Cyber practice areas and assume responsibility for taking underwriting referrals for their team in those products.
  • Liaise with Product Head and CUO on complex referrals

Portfolio Management

  • Oversee and be accountable for the portfolio of MPL, Media & Tech & Cyber accounts in the region, as part of national plan
  • Execution of product management strategies with underwriters and brokers to achieve profitable growth.
  • Drive rate and book mix in accordance with business plan
  • Class entries, re-pricing and exits
  • Analyze reports to aid in portfolio underwriting, identify specific growth and loss drivers and make data-driven recommendations for portfolio improvement.
  • Partner with product leaders, systems, actuarial and compliance to determine what enhancements are necessary to existing products and sales path, reposition existing products in the marketplace and recommend addition products, as needed.
  • Ensure UW disciplines are adhered to in order to achieve satisfactory Technical Underwriting Review and Peer Review scores.

Sales and broker management

  • Implement consistent sales practices and monitor process to ensure results are met.
  • Responsible for building new business pipelines to feed regional workflow
  • Maintain a strategic travel regimen for all UWs.
  • Be visible within region: be known by practice leads, be a visible voice on media, broker presentations, industry conferences, drive marketing and new business development with our brokers.
  • Collaborate and work hand-in-glove with Business Development Managers to drive growth initiatives, broker reformation plans and activities.
  • Actively manage renewal workflows and drive favorable outcomes on a proactive basis, deploying standardized tools, to secure maximum retention
  • Oversee underwriting, pricing and negotiating of accounts to win new business and retain renewals, consistent with Hiscox underwriting guidelines and profitability targets. Engage on specific ‘needle moving’ accounts to secure new and renewal business.
  • Develop new relationships within existing brokers and maintain existing relationships with the regional broker base.
  • Collaborate across RMs to share and leverage the success in other regions (tools, tactics, marketing activities, etc.).

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Provide feedback to operations, underwriting management, claims and marketing on ways to remove barriers to elevated performance or service and to drive increased value to our partners e.g. process tweaks/enhancements, marketing initiatives/results, product upgrades
  • Maintain excellent service standards
  • Leverage existing product infrastructure to facilitate cross-sell opportunities

Person Specification:

  • Ten or more years of insurance underwriting experience in the MPL, Media & Tech & Cyber practice areas
  • 6-8 years in a team lead / managing a team of underwriters
  • Proven track record of sales experience - working with brokers, developing and expanding a book of business; Exemplary sales skills which include pipeline, prospecting, negotiating, and closing.
  • Portfolio management experience.
  • Strong wholesale and retail broker relationships
  • B.A./B.S degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Risk Management or a related field is preferred
  • A professional underwriting designation is preferred e.g. CPCU, RPLU

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Strong understanding of sales principles, negotiation skills and a demonstrated competitive drive
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment
  • Innate customer service mentality enabling one to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external customers and partners
  • The ability to identify business needs and how to meet those needs
  • Comfort operating in a hybrid environment (mix of work from home, in-office and on-site with brokers)
  • Comfort with ambiguity
  • Strong analysis skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 20-30% regional travel required; some travel to other national offices required at times

Salary Overview

$140,000.00 - $190,000.00
