The Department of Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the Department of Surgery, Research at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago seeks a full-time non-tenure-eligible Team Scientist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor level. This individual will help grow and support federally funded research studies with a strong component of health disparities, social determinants of health and/or healthcare equity research, consistent with departmental and university missions. They will continue to develop and sustain ongoing collaborative relationships with research leadership throughout the department and the university. The position will be housed within the Department of Surgery at Lurie Children’s Hospital with full access to Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute and Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine for their research.

The Department of Surgery at Lurie Children's Hospital has an active and growing research portfolio with over 30 active extramural grant awards, including 2 K-awards, an R18, 5 R01’s, 2 U01s, and a large PCORI award. Within our 10 divisions, our faculty publish nearly 400 manuscripts a year in peer-reviewed journals and participate in numerous collaborative networks across the United States and globally. We are actively building our research infrastructure and throughput to expand our portfolio and impact on children’s health.

Responsibilities include:

• Use expertise in health disparities or social determinates of health research to increase the output of research from pediatric surgeons
• Work collaboratively on multiple grant submission as a co-investigator with a wide range of interests and expertise
• Publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at national and international conferences
• Engage with individuals across Northwestern University, Northwestern Medicine and at external institutions to identify research gaps and opportunities, develop collaborative research and operational initiatives across Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

Teaching and Mentorship include:

• Mentor residents, fellows, and colleagues in outcomes implementation science research projects
• Collaborate with colleagues across departments and institutions to foster interdisciplinary research and partnerships
• Engage with the wider academic and professional community to promote implementation science and its impact

Qualified candidates will be a scientist with a PhD and, ideally, have an established record of extramural funding individual (as PI) or collaborative (as a co-I) to support research efforts in the area of health services and outcomes research, including an interest in outcomes science relevant to surgery. Postdoctoral training is preferred, but highly qualified candidates completing their PhD programs will be considered. Current funding is not a prerequisite for the position but desirable.
