Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is seeking candidates for the Electrician position at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. We are looking for someone with an Electrical license or can acquire that license through their experience and/or training.

DUTIES:

Installs, alters, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains wiring systems, domestic and commercial appliances, solid-state electronic equipment, machinery, motor generators, overhead circuits, underground circuits, pole lines, and de-energized high voltage equipment associated with power generation and interior distribution systems. Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, and maintains complex conduit and wiring systems, electrical fixtures, and apparatus such as switches, outlets, light fixtures, exhaust and circulation fans, pull boxes, switch panels, and bus bars; tests circuits for continuity and proper connections. Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical motors and generators, seats and replaces brushes, cleans and oils motors, and does other electrical and limited mechanical work in repairing and replacing parts. Installs and performs electrical repairs on specialized electrical equipment such as refrigeration units, laundry equipment, kitchen appliances, dishwashers, HVAC systems, water heaters, and other similar equipment. Performs preventative maintenance inspections of electrical equipment and systems, and initiates work orders to prevent breakdowns and to correct deficiencies. Cleans, repairs, and maintains all tools and equipment used in the electrical trade. Estimates time, cost, and materials required for the completion of work orders, and requisitions materials as necessary; obtains proper permit to accomplish work to be completed. Advises in the selection, ordering, and storage of electrical supplies and equipment. Instructs helpers in electrical work.

REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a Nebraska Journeyman Electrical license OR Electrical Contractor license or eligibility to become licensed in Nebraska.

PREFERRED: Knowledge and prior experience with electrical system and equipment. Experience with fire alarm systems, fence alarms, door controls, and low voltage wiring. Experience with commercial kitchen and laundry equipment.

OTHER: Applicants passing the interview must also pass a security background check. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: the medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge of: the principles of electricity, to include computation and measurement of common properties such as resistance, inductance, capacitance, voltage, and current; all types of electrical systems; the qualities and adaptability of various electrical materials; local, state, and federal electrical codes; materials and equipment costs; the methods, practices, materials, and tools of the electrical trade; the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade; preventative maintenance on electrical systems and equipment. Skill in: installation and maintenance of electrical systems. Ability to: read and interpret electric schematic and one-line diagrams; analyze all safety requirements applying to installation and maintenance of electric supply overhead and underground lines; make accurate estimates of time, cost, and materials required to complete a work order; requisition materials, supplies, and work with all electrical materials and equipment; perform skilled electrical work; use/operate and care for the tools and equipment used in the electrical trade; understand and follow instructions.
