Participates in direct patient care and other supportive activities under the direct delegation of the licensed nursing staff. Maintains and applies principles of safety. Recognizes when and how to escalate patient concerns up the chain of command. Works in cooperation with other health team members. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS BY DEPARTMENT/SPECIALTY:

PCT-Medical

  • Performs individualized patient-focused care and technical tasks under the direct delegation of a registered nurse that are based on the developmental levels of the department’s specific patient population.
  • Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output as directed.
  • Assists with bathing, feeding, dressing, turning and repositioning, and transporting (wheelchair, cart, or walking).
  • Answers call lights, phones, changes bed linen, directs visitors, runs errands, and performs other functions as directed by the nursing staff.
  • Observes the patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and reports any changes to the nursing staff.
  • Collects/handles lab specimens as directed by the nursing staff.
  • Utilizes universal precautions when performing any procedure involving blood or other body fluids.
  • Properly disposes of used sharps and other biohazardous waste.
  • Abides by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Serves a population newborn through geriatric.

PCT-ED

  • All functions listed under PCT-Medical and the following:
  • Functions in the Emergency Department as a Nurse Assistant and Phlebotomist as determined by department needs.
  • Performs EKG testing.
  • Collects specimens for tests as requested by the physician or other authorized provider including blood, urine, and feces.
  • Requires successful completion of on the job phlebotomy training.
  • Identifies patients and labels specimens required by Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Collects, processes, and delivers specimens to appropriate section of the Laboratory for testing.
  • Maintains phlebotomy trays and outpatient draw station (restocking supplies, cleanliness, etc.)
  • Pre-cleaning of indicated equipment prior to High Level Disinfection.

PCT-ICU

  • All functions listed under PCT-Medical and the following:
  • Functions in the ICU as a Nurse Assistant, Unit Clerk and Monitor Tech as determined by department needs.
  • Recognizes and reports unusual rhythms or rhythm changes to the appropriate staff.
  • Requires successful completion of arrhythmia course
  • Performs clerical functions related to the unit.

PCT-Imaging

  • Performs individualized patient-focused care and technical and clerical tasks under the direct delegation of an imaging technologist.
  • Verifies two patient identifiers.
  • Communicates effectively with patients/families and all care providers.
  • Prepares patient and exam room for procedure.
  • Loads contrast into injector.
  • Transports patients to and from imaging examination rooms by wheelchair, cart, or walking.
  • Hooks patients back up to any monitors, oxygen, etc.
  • Positions the patient, ensuring patient comfort and modesty.
  • Answers call lights, phones, changes linen, directs visitors, runs errands, and performs other functions as directed by the imaging staff.
  • Observes the patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and reports any changes to the nursing staff.
  • Restocks supplies, cleans equipment, etc.
  • Utilizes universal precautions when performing any procedure involving blood or other body fluids.
  • Properly disposes of used sharps and any other biohazardous waste.
  • Abides by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Serves a population newborn through geriatric.

PCT-OB

  • All functions listed under PCT-Medical and the following:
  • Performs scrubbing functions for vaginal and cesarean deliveries and tubal ligations.
  • Requires successful completion of on the job training for sterile technique, maintenance of sterile field and instrument care/handling.
  • Assists with circumcision procedure; sets up and maintains sterile field.
  • Prepares LDRP suites with required equipment to perform specific procedures.
  • Maintains and orders supplies for LDRP unit / LDRP surgical suite.
  • Provides support to RN in delivery of obstetrical care pre- and post-delivery.
  • Performs hearing screens on newborns.
  • Collects Newborn Screens and prepares specimen to be sent to the state laboratory.

PCT-Telesitter

  • Provide continuous video observation of assigned patients
  • Verbal redirection of patient behaviors
  • Notify nursing staff as patients need staff response
  • Assist with the process of identifying patients that could have monitoring discontinued

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Previous exposure to a medical environment.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of one of the following four:
  • Completion of a nurse assistant training program; OR
  • Six months previous nurse assistant experience; OR
  • Emergency medical technician (EMT) experience; OR
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-A) experience, OR
  • Successful completion of the first semester of nursing school clinical, which includes basic clinical skills.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • One year nurse assistant experience in an acute care setting.
  • Certification as a CNA in the State of Kansas.
  • Phlebotomy Technician PBT (ASCP).

REQUIRED LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Healthcare Provider BLS through the AHA or ARC before start date.
