SUMMARY

The Controller of the Company is responsible for providing cross-functional leadership and overseeing the accounting activities and financial functions for First Interstate BancSystem, Inc. and its subsidiaries and providing timely, accurate financial reports. These functions include accounting processes and policies, general ledger maintenance, corporate accounting operations, and tax accounting and reporting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: other duties may be assigned:

  • Oversee the daily accounting operations in accordance with GAAP, including maintenance and review of general ledger accounts, appropriateness and timeliness of journal entries, and to ensure all monthly entries have been entered, accrued, or prepaid.
  • Facilitate timely delivery of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial information to both internal and external reporting. 
  • Oversee and comply with local, state, and federal government tax reporting requirements and filings.
  • Provide oversight and support for the reconciliation and accounts payable activities of the Company.
  • Participate and assist with the gathering of information for audits and examinations by Regulators and Auditors as needed. 
  • Develop and document business processes to ensure proper internal control functions are in place and documented, including SOX controls. 
  • Work collaboratively with Financial Planning and Analytics and Treasury to provide support for annual budgeting, quarterly forecasting, and annual stress testing processes.
  • Provide on-going review of accounting procedures, systems, and processes to ensure efficiency and implementation of best practices.
  • Preparation and maintenance of accounting policies, in collaboration with the Director of External Reporting.
  • Maintain collaborative cross-functional relationships that creates an environment of trust and productivity by providing accounting advice and assistance as appropriate. 
  • Hire, supervise, evaluate mentor and develop Corporate Accounting team. Perform personnel actions including performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and interviewing candidates for employment; supervise the daily activities of the accounting department including, but not limited to, effective delegation of assignments, developing work schedules to meet required timelines, and ensuring necessary training is completed. 
  • Keep abreast of industry changes and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide support for special projects, hands-on ad hoc requests, strategic initiatives and merger/acquisition opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

CPA required, in addition to 10+ years of experience in accounting and/or finance functions. Public Accounting experience preferred. Experience in a management role required. 

OTHER SKILLS

Able to organize and prioritize workload. Ability to understand the interaction between core systems, accounting systems, flow of data and workflow to optimize efficiencies and maintain quality. Demonstrate skill in use of microcomputer, financial software and spreadsheets. Proficiency of utilizing Word and Excel. Oracle experience preferred. Possess required technical skills in area of accounting. 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, financial reports, legal documents, technical procedures and government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and respond to common inquiries or complaints from bank customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Applies oral and written communication in a clear and concise manner. Uses effective communication skills in working with co-workers and internal customers. Influences others with clear explanations of facts and ideas.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Identify problems and develop solutions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk.
