Sr. Underwriting Consultant (Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) or Remote)

How you’ll contribute: 

As a Senior Underwriting Consultant, you’ll be responsible for assisting in the development of underwriting processes and procedures. As a team member of the Mortality Insights and Controls area, this individual will participate in research and craft guidelines, and work with vendors related to underwriting processes to maintain the agreed service levels.

In this role, you’ll get to:

  • Exercises sound underwriting business judgment.
  • Co-signs complex or unique presentations referred by less experienced underwriters.
  • Assists in setting underwriting philosophy, guidelines, procedures and requirements for mortality and morbidity risk management, including ownership and maintenance of the Brighthouse Life Operations Guide.
  • Engage in mentoring and development activities for the staff members in the department.
  • Conduct internal and external audits of associates and vendors to assess alignment with Brighthouse Life Operating Guidelines. 
  • Develop and track various work efforts to produce updates and recommendations for management review of auditing outcomes, compliance matters and educational development plans. 
  • Develop and enhance educational plans for associates within the underwriting department.
  • Routinely evaluate and monitor the compliance landscape and ensure underwriting guidelines and practices meet state and federal regulations by working with partners in impacted departments to address changes.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with LNB, legal, compliance, IT, product, actuarial, marketing/communications, and production underwriting to drive collaboration. 
  • Analyze underwriting intelligence to define new or updated strategies that address competitive or operational opportunities to improve customer experience, cost effectiveness and mortality/morbidity impact to underwriting.
  • Conduct competitive benchmarking and other related analyses needed to evaluate and support new underwriting strategies.
  • Partners with implementation and vendor management to evaluate new underwriting tools and opportunities.

We’re looking for people who have: 

  • At least 10 years of underwriting experience.
  • Expert level mortality and morbidity assessment.
  • Experience with the development of underwriting guidelines and staff development.
  • Experience with underwriting audit and other oversight and surveillance mechanisms
  • Prior experience reviewing state and federal regulations to ensure compliance with any changes in the law.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • Holds FALU, FLMI and/or CLU industry designations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and influencing skills.
  • Life underwriting signature limit of $5M or greater.
