The College and the District

Cañada College is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is designated as both a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), enrolling approximately 10,000 students each academic year. Cañada College has a diverse student population that reflects the communities that it serves. The Position

The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Art. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.

  1. Teach lecture sections of art in various modalities as needed (in-person, hybrid, online) with an emphasis on two-dimensional drawing and composition, painting, design, color theory, and two or more of the following: figure and portraiture, digital mixed media, or other selected art classes
  2. Assist in curriculum revisions and new course development to include student learning outcomes and assessment processes
  3. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology that will enhance the offerings of the art department
  4. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office and lab hours
  5. Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies and curricula across modalities
  6. Participate as a member of department, division, and college committees
  7. Serve as the primary contact/lead faculty for the studio art program
  8. Maintain the art gallery space for student shows in collaboration with digital art and other programs
  9. Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional and programmatic needs

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a Master’s or above in fine arts, art, or art history OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s or above in humanities OR the equivalent (NOTE: “Master’s in fine arts” as used here refers to any master’s degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing, or other nonplastic arts.)
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence

The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence

Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence

The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following.

Subject Matter Preparation:

  1. Demonstrated successful teaching experience in beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of two-dimensional art
  2. Demonstrated record of exhibitions

Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:

In addition to a short classroom lecture demonstration that will be part of the interview process, appropriate evidence includes but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:

  1. Demonstrated skills in two-dimensional drawing and design, figure drawing, painting, portraiture, and other art classes
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of historical usage of materials and techniques used in two-dimensional art
  3. The ability to reflect on and evaluate one’s pedagogy and to examine its effect critically
  4. The ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students’ abilities and learning styles in both developmental and transfer courses
  5. The ability to use teaching methods and modalities that engage students actively in their learning, promote the development of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become self-regulated learners
  6. The ability to use instructional methods across modalities that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to the subject matter
  7. The ability to create a digital portfolio of personal or professional artwork as a presentation vehicle
  8. The commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, and related technology appropriate to instruction, such as that related to 2D art and information and communication technology
  9. The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
  10. The ability to ensure consistent and appropriate assessment of student progress
  11. The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
  12. A familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in art education
  13. A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague:

  1. The ability and desire to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, laboratory preparations, and student success
  2. Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division, and college activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
  • Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
  • Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in art
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within art courses and classrooms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the importance of the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) and Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designations for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
