Overview

The Free People Design Assistant's primary responsibility is to facilitate the development process of private-label product for Free People Denim category. This role works in support of the Designer to design and source product appropriate to the Free People target customer.

Responsibilities

  • Support seasonal development calendar in partnership with designer/buyers/technical designers/production.
  • Prepare development packages and participate in all communication and follow up related to each package in partnership with the Design Coordinator and Product Development Team.
  • Create technical set-up sheets, including technical flat sketches, for each style and import each style into Tradestone system.
  • Communicate fit and construction details to Technical Design department.
  • Maintain an active role in the weekly crossfuntional meetings. Take notes and follow up on all outstanding issues.
  • Attend product fittings and take notes on changes to share with team and update sketches as appropriate.
  • As able and needed, sew and mock design product for design presentations.
  • Create digital CADs for designed presentation using Adobe Suite.

Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the desire and ability to effectively collaborate with your team and cross functional partners
  • Ability to respond to business objectives with creative, innovative, and cost-effective design solutions
  • Ability to recognize and accurately forecast fashion and cultural trends as they relate to the Free People target customer
  • Ability to sketch or to communicate design ideas by hand sketching and via computer programs: Procreate, Adobe Suite etc.
  • Ability or interest in learning how to pattern garments, hand sew, work with 3D software (CLO) and/or emerging AI programs to generate unique designed product concepts.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of the Free People customer and ability to speak to the brand’s handwriting and DNA.
  • Entry level technical knowledge of woven and/or denim apparel construction
  • Some working knowledge of fabrics, trims and fabric treatments as well as wash and dye techniques
  • Understanding of or some previous exposure to manufacturing techniques and processes
  • Desire and ability to research and report on industry trend direction, color direction, and fabric innovations approximately 9-12 months ahead of season
  • Ability to clearly communicating both verbally and in written form internally and with external partners

Education

Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design preferred
