Job Description

The New York Times Opinion desk is looking for a technological-savvy digital designer to join our award-winning design team. You will work with other editors, artists, and photo/art directors in crafting and translating digital designs into compelling mobile-first visual storytelling products and experiences through code, prioritizing optimal UX performance and experimentation with the newest technology. You will work in a collaborative manner, responsible for coordinating multiple assets and contributors, and meeting deadlines that follow audience plans.

You must possess a front-end portfolio demonstrating a talent in aesthetics, layout, motion, storytelling techniques, and user-centered design principles. You are a front-end development expert, with an affinity for brand consistency and an eye for subtle detail. They understand and quickly distill complex ideas into clean, organized and understandable code and digital experiences. We’re seeking broad experience working with video, audio, and graphics. But just as important, we’re looking for someone with experience working with collaborators when they reach the limits of their expertise. Original, flexible, critical thinkers who collaborate well with a range of contributors and stakeholders will succeed.

Responsibilities:

  • Convey interactive story ideas and complex interactions quickly with wireframes or prototypes, quickly incorporating feedback into iterative process.
  • Build a range of digital projects which utilize deeply immersive storytelling experiences (audio, video, text and image).
  • Create templates for recurring editorial features. 
  • Improve projects to load and perform across browsers and devices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues of different backgrounds and wide-ranging technical levels.
  • Work with fellow art directors, designers, reporters, editors, producers, and software developers at The Times. 
  • Design team members are expected not only to contribute to the presentation of our journalism, but also to engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of digital design experience
  • Strong visual and interactive design skills — a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior
  • Proficient with iterative wireframing in Figma
  • Experience in client-side Web development, including Javascript, HTML and CSS required
  • A pragmatic innovator whose solutions elicit responses that justify the effort and investment
  • Experience designing, building, maintaining and implementing pixel-perfect digital design systems across multiple platforms
  • An interest in narrative, visual storytelling and journalism
  • Strong attention to detail and written and oral communication skills
  • Willingness to work a flexible, news-driven schedule that may occasionally include nights or weekends

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative coding workflows
  • Experience or familiarity with Svelte
  • Experience with WebGL, three.js, canvas, React, After Effects, Cinema4D, Blender or Maya

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $109,521.19 and $136,000.00.
