The Department of Crop & Soil Science is seeking a Department Head. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Department Head is a recognized national and international leader in crop science, soil science, agronomy, or an allied field and provides visionary and facilitative leadership for all teaching, research, Extension, and outreach programs in the department. The Department Head interacts effectively with a large and wide-ranging group of faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders in industry groups, public agencies, and private organizations to advance the mission of the department, college, and university. The Department Head provides administrative, managerial, fiscal, and scientific leadership; maintains and promotes a collaborative and productive environment for faculty, staff, and students; establishes and maintains strong ties with stakeholders; and advocates effectively for the Department. The Department Head must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Key Responsibilities

60% ADMINISTRATION AND PROGRAMMATIC DEVELOPMENT

Provides dynamic and visionary leadership to maintain and advance the department as a widely recognized regional, national, and international leader in Crop and Soil Science. Works with faculty to identify emerging opportunities and develop innovative strategies to enhance departmental programs. Creates a supportive environment for transformative, interdisciplinary programs that address complex research issues, engage and educate clientele, and prepare today’s students to address tomorrow’s problems.

Oversees daily operations of the Department of Crop and Soil Science, including the facilitation of ongoing regional and multistate cooperative opportunities and issues. Develops and secures staff and support for high quality teaching, research and Extension programs statewide. Where appropriate, works with station directors and Extension regional directors to implement, staff, and support key programs and maintain adequate resources to ensure success.

Recruits outstanding faculty and staff, clearly communicates expectations and goals, and provides criterion-based performance evaluations. Encourages, supports, and creates opportunities for faculty and staff development, study leaves, and sabbaticals. Develops effective mentoring relationships and programs to optimize faculty success. Nominates faculty and staff for department, college, university, or national recognition. Builds and promotes a work environment that respects and values wide-ranging opinions.

Provides active leadership in advancing the department’s goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Coordinates with Branch Experiment Station Directors and Heads of other units to mentor and evaluate faculty located off campus and faculty with joint positions in Crop and Soil Science and other units. Provides an academic home for faculty located in Branch Experiment Stations, Extension offices and the Sustainability Double Degree Program by supporting them through the promotion and tenure process.

Provides oversight for CSS Corvallis and Ecampus academic programs, ensuring that these programs grow and provide high quality, up-to-date, and challenging content, including experiential learning activities, needed to train the next generation of soil and crop scientists. Makes teaching assignments to ensure that classes are taught on schedule and that teaching facilities and equipment are appropriate. Engages with faculty to carry out the teaching plans outlined in the departmental strategic plan. Carries out annual learning outcome assessments and other periodic reporting requirements.

Manages departmental budget, making sound investments that advance departmental programs in alignment with the departmental and OSU strategic plans and the college’s strategic advantages, while exhibiting sound stewardship and fiscal responsibility.

Provides guidance and leadership to the manager of farm facilities and Seed Services. Represents Seed Service interests at college, university, and state levels.

Participates as a member of the College of Agricultural Sciences administrative team. Contributes to long-range planning, fosters inter-unit cooperation, and supports college-wide programs. Works collaboratively with the heads of other units to help ensure cross-college planning, coordination, joint programs, and other activities that advance the department’s mission.

Assists with variety releases, intellectual property development, and royalty distribution for field crops through appropriate channels.

Advance the global footprint of CSS by leveraging existing and developing new international connections.

15% DEVELOPMENT AND FUNDRAISING

Works collaboratively with development officers and the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences to develop private gifts that provide new department facilities, endowed professorships or support of department personnel, students, and operations.

15% INVOLVEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDER GROUPS, INDUSTRY AND COMMODITY COMMISSIONS

Develops and maintains strong collaborative relationships with relevant stakeholders, industry, commodity commissions, and state and federal agencies. Ensure there is open and regular communication, and that the department is meeting stakeholder and industry needs and is proactive in addressing emerging issues. This includes attending relevant stakeholder conferences and events and Agricultural Experiment Station field days, as well as attending commodity commission meetings. Driving is required.

10% UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE SERVICE

Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with professional organizations and agencies that have interests in crop and soil science and related fields. Serves on state, regional, and national advisory committees as appropriate to position responsibilities. Serves on College of Agricultural Sciences and other University committees as appropriate and as requested by the Department, College, Division of Extension and Engagement, and the University.

What You Will Need

Ph.D. degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, or a related discipline.

National/international record of scholarly achievement in research, Extension, instructional and/or service activities within the crop or soil sciences or related disciplines, commensurate with the rank of Professor with tenure.

Commitment to the missions of undergraduate and graduate teaching, applied and basic research, and outreach to urban and rural communities across Oregon.

Outstanding professional and collaborative leadership including demonstrated success as an interdisciplinary team player who actively seeks collaboration, promotes success of the teams and people with whom they collaborate, and puts the success of their collaborative groups above their own self-interest.

Record of securing programmatic support for instruction, research, service, and/or outreach.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated capacity to collaborate, manage and resolve conflicts with a wide range of faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders in public agencies and private organizations, growers, volunteers, and the public.

Demonstrable commitment to diversity equity and inclusion, including development and implementation of actionable goals and strategies to improve opportunities and outcomes for underrepresented students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders.

Ability to travel frequently within Oregon. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OAR 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
