Position Summary: 

In close collaboration with the Senior Director of University Publications, the Associate Director of University Publications oversees all aspects of production of and serves as lead project manager for Villanova Magazine, and assists in the writing, editing and production of the President’s Report and other special projects that facilitate the fulfillment of the University’s strategic priorities. Acting as Associate Editor, the Associate Director is responsible for developing storyboards; writing and editing copy; and working collaboratively with designers, writers (both staff and freelance) and photographers for Villanova Magazine. The individual in this position also oversees production of the digital editions of Villanova Magazine, the President’s Report and special projects. The Associate Director serves as a resource to University Communication and Marketing and collaborates with various University constituents by providing research, writing and proofreading expertise in the production and communication of institutional materials, publications, email, and web projects to ensure consistency and adherence to the editorial style guidelines throughout the University. Works closely with independent contractors and vendors by overseeing and scheduling assignments and tracking invoices.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • In close collaboration with the Senior Director of University Publications, the Associate Director of University Publications oversees all aspects of production of and serves as lead project manager for Villanova Magazine, and assists in the writing, editing and production of the President’s Report and other special projects that facilitate the fulfillment of the University’s strategic priorities. Acting as Associate Editor, develops storyboards, researches and writes stories for these publications and edits copy written by staff and freelance writers; identifies, develops and pitches relevant stories that support the University’s strategic plan, key messages, branding and priorities; coordinates photo and artwork selection; communicates design feedback; and assists the Senior Director with the review and approval process. Also responsible for assuring accuracy in all print and electronic materials.
  • Functions as a resource to University Communication and Marketing and collaborates with various University constituents by providing research, writing and proofreading expertise in the production and communication of institutional materials, publications, email and web to assure accuracy and consistency throughout the University. Assists in maintaining the AP and University editorial style guides and serves as a resource to others. Maintains content in story databases.
  • In close collaboration with the Senior Director, serves as a liaison with independent contractors and vendors by overseeing assignments and scheduling, managing deadlines, providing feedback, obtaining and tracking invoices for payment, and other projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or related field.
  • 8+ years of professional writing and editing experience within a business, academic or nonprofit environment.
  • Excellent written communication skills, proficient in writing for print publications and other mediums, including the web.
  • Team player with exceptional creativity and strong interpersonal, organizational, proofreading and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful project management with the ability to maintain excellent internal/external relationships.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment.
  • Commitment to the well-being of the University, a commitment to the University’s Augustinian Catholic heritage, the advancement of its mission, and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Associated Press Style.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Managerial/supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Experience Manager) preferred.
  • Experience with Airtable project management tool is also a plus.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: Must have the ability to work evenings, weekends, and possibly holidays as the demands of the job dictate.
