Job Description:

APIs are foundational to the Genius Sports product strategy, enabling extended value and accelerated delivery of data, services, and applications to our customers, partners, and internal developers. Scaling our Sports Data platform, integrating data and workflows, unlocking innovation, and driving efficiency with our APIs are key objectives for this role. We are looking for a product manager who has defined, built, operated, and scaled API products in a highly cross-functional environment.

Great API's express the business and data of the company; they must be intuitive, approachable, and easy to use. You will guide a cross-functional team to research, define, and deliver core APIs to improve how we collect, manage, connect, and deliver core data inside and outside the company. Experience of user-centric design-thinking and goal-oriented workflows is essential.

The data platform is a foundation for go forward products and includes key attributes such as data acquisition at scale, data parsing, normalization, identity services, policy, best record matching, and data access. You will work as part of the Sports Data product and engineering delivery teams, so a strong working knowledge of data management and data governance practices is essential.

What you'll be doing:

  • Working with a variety of stakeholders (sports betting, fan engagement, advertising, leagues/teams, 3rd party data providers and consumers) to understand their business needs and ways of collaborating to provide rich APIs that securely expose intuitive, flexible data and workflows.
  • Own the API product strategy and roadmap and review the roadmap with key stakeholders to ensure alignment including the ownership and creation of data sharing/distribution user stories.
  • Understand trade-offs amongst both developers—the API’s direct customers— and the end users those developers serve.
  • Maintain and rationalize our existing API portfolio to create a strategy and roadmap, including technology fit, to optimize those APIs being utilized/supported, sunsetting legacy API implementations, migrating customers from these, evolving current tools, and building new tools where necessary.
  • Take the long view; prioritize ease of consumption, core use-cases, and seek to increase the likelihood the API can continue to provide strategic value and extensibility in the future.
  • Provide documentation, consistent design standards, considerations for versioning and security, and other factors important for future use and extensibility.
  • Define product functional, scalability, configuration, and deployment requirements.
  • Partner with engineering to build robust end-to-end monitoring, alerting, and reporting capabilities to assist in maintaining highly available and performant processing.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience is required in the discipline of product management, with a proven record of launching and scaling API products.
  • Demonstrated passion for APIs, their design, tooling, lifecycle, and infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have experience working with distributed high-volume, low-latency data and services, including a working knowledge of real-time streaming systems.
  • Solid understanding of software development processes and ability to converse fluently with engineering teams and discuss technical concepts and requirements.
  • Proficiency in API design standards, protocols, and architectures (REST, GraphQL, SOAP, etc.)
  • Understanding of API security best practices, authentication, and authorization methods (OAuth, JWT, etc.).
  • User-centric mindset with the ability to advocate for the user and incorporate user feedback into the product development process.
  • Understand cost implications of solutions (technology and cloud infrastructure) and provide recommendations to manage costs.
  • Ability to direct and influence a team of architects, engineers, and product stakeholders in the conceptualization, design, and delivery of a cohesive API product strategy.
  • Exceptional communication skills, in writing and verbally, whether in small group discussions, large-scale presentations, or with senior leadership and customers.
  • Comfortable applying a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to define success.
  • Experience in Agile product development and delivery, including backlog management, refinement, and prioritization.
