How you will make an impact

The Executive Director, Tax and Insurance holds enterprise-level responsibility for strategic and compliance leadership of the Company’s global tax function and coordinates all aspects of global corporate income tax, sales and use tax, real and personal property tax, and annual reports/ franchise tax, while working closely with the accounting and finance teams to support the overall corporate financial objectives. They lead the development and implementation of federal, state, and global tax planning strategies, provide technical assistance on various tax issues and partner with Company management and third-party service providers to ensure policies and processes mitigate risk and proactively identify savings opportunities. The position is also responsible for risk assessment, implementation and management of corporate insurance. 

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to:

Tax:

  • Implement federal, state, and global tax strategies based on company goals and objectives to minimize the Company’s effective tax rate, assessing the tax impact of critical initiatives and driving tax decision-making that makes valuable contributions for the company.
  • Advise leadership in strategic decision-making to ensure business planning accounts for relevant tax considerations.
  • Ensure compliance with US and international tax laws and regulations.
  • Oversee management of other tax topics, including employment taxes, transactional taxes (e.g., SUT/GST/VAT), and tax impacts of stock compensation
  • Leads all aspects of the quarterly tax provisions.
  • Oversight of the completion of federal, international, and state income tax returns including all related analysis and support, and oversight of property, sales and use tax functions.
  • Develop tax forecasts to allow for tax planning and long-range projections of effective tax rates.
  • Monitor tax law changes and proposed changes and impact on returns and provision, forecasts and long-range projections.
  • Assist in due diligence for business development activities advising on income tax related matters including valuation of acquired net operating losses, input on tax implications of deal structure, and any other relevant tax related matters.
  • Hire, lead, coach and develop members of the global tax team

Insurance:

  • Analyze risk exposures and recommend procurement of various insurance policies for the company on a global basis.
  • Own the renewal process of insurance policies.
  • Gather all requisite underwriting information from internal sources (i.e. accounting, R&D, commercial, legal, operations, etc.)
  • Manage insurance related activities such as claims, policy audits, due diligence reviews, payment of premiums, etc.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with at least 18 years of experience in the tax field with depth in tax planning and strategy (an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered)
  • 5 years’ experience working in public accounting.
  • Minimum 10 years of dynamic executive leadership experience
  • Master’s degree in Business Taxation, JD and/or CPA preferred.
  • Experience in biotech/pharmaceutical industry a plus
  • Strong understanding of federal, international, and multi-state corporate income taxation
  • Strong technical knowledge of complex tax issues
  • Executive presence: a polished leader that exercises senior-level judgment and inspires confidence among senior leaders and collaborators, internal and external to the company.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience translating complex tax issues and requirements to people without a tax background.
  • Strong analytical thinking and writing skills.
  • Proven track record of developing and leading a team to higher performance levels.
  • Must have hands-on approach and success in working in a team-based environment; expert at building and maintaining strong working relationships with internal partners and executive management.

The most likely base pay range for this position is $260K - $329K per year. Several factors, such as experience, tenure, skills, and particular business needs, will determine an individual’s exact level of compensation. Base salary is only one element of employee compensation at Halozyme. Total compensation could include bonuses, sales incentives, and equity awards.
