The Chicago-Kent College of Law Library seeks an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented law librarian to join our Research and Instruction team as the Research and Instructional Services Librarian. The Research and Instructional Services Librarian reports to the Director of the Law Library. The Research and Instructional Services Librarian collaborates with other law librarians to develop, expand, and provide library services, including reference and research services for students and faculty, in-class instruction, and research tools such as research guides. The position is a full-time position and is available immediately.

The Chicago-Kent College of Law Library in the Conviser Law Center is located in downtown Chicago, one of the largest legal markets in the country. The Law Library advances the academic and scholarly success of students and faculty by providing future-focused training and professional research assistance to a diverse community. The Law Library fosters respect for all community members and ideas; supports the learning experience with strategies, services, and space; connects community members to resources in the library, the law school, and beyond; and equips students with practice-ready, strategic skills for their careers.

Special Schedule Requirements

Generally, Monday – Friday. However, the schedule may include occasional evening or weekend hours to meet the needs of a class or serve as a backup for the library’s service hours. The position offers the benefit of a hybrid work schedule.

Education & Experience

MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalent and J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school. Two to four years of law library experience is preferred.

Preferred:

  • Teaching or presentation experience.
  • Experience in course or instructional design and development.
  • Experience or interest in effectively integrating new technologies in teaching and learning.
  • Experience designing, creating, and implementing programs and initiatives using law practice strategies and technologies.
  • Knowledge of library-relevant technology applications, including LibGuides.

SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY

The position does not have supervisory or budget responsibility.

Physical Environment and Requirements

Typical work environment is an office setting.

Key Responsibility

Teaches legal research in various settings, including guest lectures for the Legal Research & Writing curriculum. Provides subject-specific law practice presentations in clinical and doctrinal courses. Develops instructional content and materials. Additional instructional responsibilities may include developing and teaching courses related to practice-based advanced legal research instruction.

Percentage Of Time 40 Key Responsibility

Provides in-depth, legal, and interdisciplinary research support for faculty and students through in-person, email, or remote research consultations.

Percentage Of Time 35 Key Responsibility

Creates and updates electronic Research Guides, tutorials, and instructional videos to support the law school curriculum.

Percentage Of Time 20 Key Responsibility

Maintains current awareness of issues and trends related to legal research and instruction by participating in professional development activities. Participates in special events to promote the law library and its services and engages in law school life by attending events and volunteering for projects. Other duties as assigned.

Percentage Of Time 5 Work Hours

Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
