This position is based on Stanford’s main campus, with consideration given to the option for a hybrid work schedule (partially onsite and offsite), subject to operational need. The Stanford Sustainability Accelerator seeks up to two full-time Program Officers to support the Accelerator’s Flagship Destination program. Flagship Destination programs are ambitious and aspirational goals that have the potential for impactful solutions on a global scale. Examples of potential flagship destinations include: adaptation measures for 1 billion people against the risks of climate-induced weather extremes by 2050, protecting 30 percent of land and water by 2030, or freshwater production and management for a billion people by 2050. The first of these Flagship Destinations, already underway, is focused on developing solutions to remove gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent from the atmosphere per year.

Under the general direction of faculty and program leads from the SDSS Institutes and Accelerator, the Flagship Destination Program Officer will support the development, implementation, and administration of the vision, strategy, and goals of the Flagship Destinations. Responsibilities will include helping to identify flagship destinations, define the landscape, whitespaces, and barriers, develop and manage the request for proposal and awards process and coordinate the ongoing collaboration of the Flagship Destination research teams. Flagship Destinations will span a wide range of environmental issues and will integrate the development of technological, governance, financial, and other societal innovations, including addressing equity and justice issues. The Program Officer, therefore, must be able to work with a wide range of stakeholders from academia, industry, government, and other organizations, and be able to get up to speed quickly on topic areas outside their area of expertise. We are looking for someone highly motivated, excited about innovating, comfortable with a dynamic, start-up-like environment, and who knows how to get things done.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources, and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
  • Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research.
  • ISource, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
  • Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
  • Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
  • Design and deliver workshops and convenings to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development and partnerships.
  • May coach and mentor program staff.

To be successful in this position, you will need: 

  • Advanced degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Ability to develop program partnerships and engage internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Basic knowledge of managing budgets.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • PhD in science, engineering, environment, sustainability or related discipline with some previous experience working on policy issues
  • Experience designing and convening workshops
  • Ability to influence without authority

The expected pay range for this position is $94,000 to $139,000 per annum.
