We are seeking a Sr. Laboratory Coordinator. This position supports the education mission of the chemistry department by providing support for and administering training programs as related to the upper-level Undergraduate laboratory courses. In this role, the Lab Coordinator will report to the Department Administrator and the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. This position requires coordination with faculty to develop the administrative tools and data systems for strategic planning that advances the Department's undergraduate experience for the students, faculty, and the department. This position is grant-funded through June 30, 2028.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Training & management of Teaching Assistants 

  • Work with the Instructional faculty and payroll to hire and recruit graduate and undergraduate Teaching Assistants for the lab courses (see below)
  • Oversee and train graduate and undergraduate Teaching Assistants for the following labs,
  • Physical Chemistry – I,
  • Physical Chemistry – II,
  • Advanced Inorganic Chemistry,
  • Intermediate Organic Chemistry,
  • Quantitative Analytical Lab and
  • Chemical Chirality Lab
  • Maintain teaching and grading schedules and office hours for the Teaching Assistants for the lab courses. Reserve rooms for pre-lab lectures and office hours for the Teaching Assistants.
  • Review experimental protocols with instructional faculty and train the Teaching Assistants on effective ways to teach these labs as needed.
  • Train Teaching Assistants (graduate/undergraduate) on use of instruments for the various labs as needed.
  • Identify and evaluate specific areas in need of development in the training of Teaching Assistants and work with Instructional faculty to establish best practices to address these needs.

Management of lab experiments, equipment/instrumentation, and lab space 

  • Maintain and regularly service instruments and equipment related to the above lab courses.
  • Ensure that glassware and lab related chemicals and solutions are available for the labs for each semester.
  • Ensure that the lab spaces have been cleaned and decommissioned between semesters.
  • Update or revise existing lab protocols as needed.
  • Assist with development of new lab experiments as needed.
  • Keep an inventory of all chemicals, glassware, existing and empty gas tanks that need to be replaced.
  • Manage and dispose of waste chemicals and broken glassware throughout the semester.
  • Assist with printing of lab manuals, lab exams and posters as needed.
  • Work with Introductory Chemistry Coordinators to manage drawers and assigned glassware for students.

Physical Requirements 

  • This position requires non-traditional business hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD. in chemistry.
  • Experience in designing lab experiments, maintaining lab equipment and training graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Experience in a teaching lab setting (could include work as a graduate Teaching assistant).

Starting Salary Range: Min $40,900 - Mid $56,250 - Max $71,600 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
