About the Position:

The Engineering Librarian for Research & Teaching Support will join the Head Librarian, Engineering Librarian for Data and Collections, and Digital Technology Manager in the Terman Engineering Library. As a member of an interdisciplinary team of science and engineering librarians in the Science and Engineering Resource Group, the Engineering Librarian for Research & Teaching Support will provide direct support in the use of library materials, help guide community members through the scholarly communication process, and play an active role in supporting the research lifecycle of data. This position will have the opportunity to impact the future of library services for the Stanford engineering community and is especially geared towards librarians with interests and/or experiences in engineering/scientific information, scholarly communication and research data management, and outreach and instruction.

Core Duties

Serves as a research and teaching liaison to the School of Engineering, its Departments and Institutes, Labs and Centers to ensure that library services and collections support current research and teaching programs. Maintains close contact with faculty to anticipate their research and instructional needs and to provide relevant library resources and programs. Reports to the Head of the Terman Engineering Library.

• Maintains familiarity with the evolving organization of the School of Engineering, its departments, institutes, labs and centers, as well as the teaching and research programs of faculty therein.

○ Meets directly with faculty and attends seminars and events organized by the School.

○ Monitors faculty publication activities and trends via bibliographic databases, publication alerts, Stanford Engineering Magazine, and other methods as relevant.

• Provides reference, instruction, and advanced online search services in engineering to students, faculty, and staff.

○ Helps users find and manage information and data and critically evaluate and use resources and tools.

○ Provides instruction on library resources and materials and related methods and tools.

○ Uses outreach strategies and instructional services to develop relationships with users that optimize the impact of library expertise and services in the areas of engineering information.

• Supports digital scholarship efforts by providing instruction and support in data management and open access engagement.

○ Provides instruction and support to faculty and students in order to ensure articles and data created by Stanford authors are aligned with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and CARE (Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, and Ethics) principles.

○ Work with faculty on the deposit of articles, data, code, and materials into the library repository in accordance with government mandates and the Open Access Policy.

○ Consults and performs advanced bibliographic and numeric searches in engineering resources.

• Creates and maintains resources in support of research and teaching, e.g., library guides and web pages. 
• Works with the librarians in the branch on outreach efforts including supporting the MakerBar, orientation events, and Carpentries initiatives.
• Supports the Engineering Librarian for Data and Collections to manage and evaluate engineering resources and materials for the Stanford Libraries in support of teaching and research.
• Stays abreast of developments in engineering librarianship by actively participating in professional organizations.
• Participates in library projects, programs, and committees, as appropriate.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience. College-level coursework or relevant work experience in engineering or a related discipline is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Practical knowledge of the literature in engineering is required.
• Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
• Ability to contribute to the development and implementation of new or improved services and resources in support of research and teaching. Preferred evidence would be successful work supporting graduate level research, experience working with academic research data, and providing related instruction.
• Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with faculty, students, and library staff is required. Ability to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse workplace environment is also required.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to manage time and multiple projects in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, creative, and innovative attitude.
• Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally, in writing, and through online platforms, is required.

Other Relevant Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities May Include

• Experience in the use of high-level programming languages such as R, Python, or MatLab.
• Familiarity with 3D printing, circuitry, and other makerspace skills desired.
• General knowledge of collection development principles and practices is preferred. 

Physical Requirements*

• Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
• Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
• Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
• Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
• Must be able to push and maneuver a fully loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position at the Librarian 1 level is $73,000 to $92,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
