Job Description

The Dean of Student Support Services is responsible for ensuring that all students receiving special education services receive comprehensive, compassionate, and equitable services in order to achieve significant academic gains for all of our students with IEPs. 

The Special Education Achievement Manager will also be responsible for supporting Deans of Student Support and Special Education Teachers in delivering data driven high-quality special education services. 

The Dean of Student Support will work collaboratively with all SST Teammates (SW, Psychologist, MTSS Coordinator and SLP), Service Providers and families to provide a strong educational program for all KIPPsters.

The Dean of Student Support will lead the implementation, and management of KNOS Special Education Program, policies, and procedures.

Key DSS Leadership Skills:

  • Ability to execute consistent and effective coaching cycle with sped teachers (aligned to KNOS coaching focus)
  • Ability to unpack curriculum/standards & develop backwards plans to target Sped Specific instructional needs Ability to develop urgent and targeted sped teacher & personal schedules and expectations that drives urgent academic & compliance outcomes
  • Ability to analyze student achievement data (Progress Monitoring & Checkpoint/Unit) and develop strategic plans that target student/teacher gaps
  • Ability to manage a team of SST Members to rigorous outcomes (Sped Teachers, Social Worker, ESL Teacher, SLP & Psychologist- in collaboration with Regional Manager)
  • Ability to navigate Sped Specific & KNOS Data Platforms (SER to manage & maintain student records & Tableau & Powerschool)
  • Establish & maintain organization systems for IEP Meetings & IEP Student Records maintenance (SER/Binders)
  • Establish & execute system audits for IEP Meetings & Student Records (SER/Binders)
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with families to ensure deep partnership & transparency in supporting student with IEP
  • Ability to engage and model restorative approaches to discipline with students, families and teachers serving students with IEPs

Dean of Student Support Instructional Duties:

  • Engage in observation, real-time coaching & feedback cycle for ALL Sped Teachers on Instructional Coaching caseload
  • Plan, Prepare and execute weekly coaching check-ins with ALL Sped Teachers on Instructional Coaching caseload
  • Review and province feedback on ALL WAGS, Modified Lesson Plans & Student Materials for ALL Sped Teachers 
  • Develop, maintain & audit Sped Teacher urgent schedules to ensure maximized instructional minutes aligned to IEP minutes 
  • Manage Sped Teachers to collect, analyze & inform Re-teach plans with progress monitoring data 

Dean of Student Support Compliance Duties:

  • Train case-managers on how to effectively write an IEP, Track IEP Goals & hold IEP meetings
  • Attend all IEP meetings within timeline & provide feedback to case-managers on 100% of IEPs before finalizing IEPS in SER 
  • Develop, maintain and share IEP calendar with all key stakeholders to ensure case managers are able to execute 100% of IEP meetings in timeline 
  • Develop and execute cycle of bi-weekly Student Records audits & provide feedback to ALL sped Teachers to ensure clean Sped Records
  • Ensure that all teachers are aware of scholars ELL, IEP and 504 accommodations and modifications.
  • Collaborate w/ RTI Team to develop & monitor 504 plans & organize & communicate accommodations to all teachers, families & administrators 
  • Manage service providers through weekly check-ins to ensure all compliance outcomes within timeline
  • Collaborate with Psychologists to meet all evaluation deadlines and remove barriers through weekly check-ins
  • Collaborate with Manager of ELL & Special Programs to coordinate and manage ESL & AFS/BSP services 
  • Collaborate with SOL to coordinate & problem solve ongoing Special Transportation challenges (Special Transportation is owned by School based SOL) 

Dean of Student Support Discipline Duties:

  • Collaborate with Leadership Team to consult on and monitor suspensions of all students with IEPs & execute MDR Meeting when any students exceed 10 suspensions
  • Collaborate with RTI Team and write behavior Intervention plans and attend all FBA/BIP Meetings

Key Sped Compliance Leadership Responsibilities:

  • 10/1: 100% Sped students within jurisdiction & meet compliance requirements
  • 2/1 Tiered Projections: Collaborate with SL, RTI Coordinator & Psychologist to develop 2/1 Tiered Projections 
  • 2/1: 100% Sped students within jurisdiction & meet compliance requirements
  • LEAP Connect Assessment Qualifications & Administration: 100% sped st. who meet requirements qualify & complete LEAP Connect assessment 
  • KNOS & State Testing Accommodations, Groupings & Administration: 100% sped st. receive IEP aligned accommodations & complete all assessments
  • Modification of KNOS Curriculum/Student Work: 100% sped st. receive IEP aligned modifications and accommodations in core content classes
  • IEP Meetings: 100% of IEP meetings are held within timelines & all documentation is completed and organized in Students Records (SER & Binder)
  • Student Records: Digitize, organize & maintain compliance student records for 100% of sped students

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-3 years teaching experience in urban, open enrollment schools and demonstrated student results at an exemplary level
  • Successful completion of State and Federal Criminal Background Check

  • Instructional Leadership: Adept at data analysis; ability to extract meaningful insights across school-wide data
  • Instructional Leadership: Expertise in what the school-wide academic standards and state assessments require of students’ knowledge and skills to demonstrate mastery; able to translate student mastery requirements into instructional plans and strategies
  • Instructional Leadership: Deep understanding of appropriate application and differentiation of high-leverage instructional strategies (e.g. make kids do the heavy lifting, pacing, stretch-it, etc.) based on comprehension of child development and pedagogy
  • Instructional Leadership: Command of instructional design and the benefits and tradeoffs of school design decisions in driving student achievement
  • Achievement Orientation: Demonstrated resilience and focus on student outcomes
  • Student Focus: Belief that all students, regardless of background, have the ability to go to and through college; demonstrated commitment to the school’s unique community
  • Talent Development: Demonstrated success in developing leadership capacity in others
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated ability to create inclusive environments that honor and support a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives
  • Performance Management: Demonstrated student achievement results from teachers and leaders that he/she manages and coaches
  • Direction Setting: Ability to set direction across an entire school and motivate others to action
  • Provide documentation of either 1) received a COVID-19 vaccination or 2) have requested, and been granted, reasonable accommodation from the KNOS Director of Human Resources to be exempted from the requirements of this policy

The following are strongly preferred for all KIPP New Orleans Deans of Student Support:

  • Masters in Education or aligned content
  • 2-3 years teaching experience with at least 2 years of leadership experience in urban, open enrollment schools and demonstrated student results at an exemplary level in both roles
  • State issued teaching credential
