Position Function:

The Coastal Research and Extension Center (CREC), Mississippi State University (MSU) is seeking a Post-doctoral Associate. Current funding is for two years with the possibility of an extension depending on the availability of funds. This position will be located at the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS. Salary Grade: UC

Department Profile:

The Coastal Research and Extension Center is Mississippi State University’s “southern exposure,” linking residents of the coastal region to the university. The center’s mission is to conduct research and education programs aimed at developing a better understanding and use of renewable and nonrenewable resources in south Mississippi. Its applied research and educational programs with biological, physical and social systems focus on enhancing the quality of life of residents of Mississippi and other Gulf states. Our priorities address the specific needs of diverse communities including the health and well-being of the people and responsible stewardship of unique natural resources. The Coastal Research and Extension Center is the leader in providing responsive solutions addressing social, environmental, and economic integration of Research and Extension.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The associate will work with Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and CREC scientists, Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Aquaculture faculty, Federal (i.e., U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, etc.), State (i.e., Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, etc.), non-government organizations (i.e., Delta Audubon, Wildlife Mississippi, etc.) and academic partners to develop and conduct extramurally-funded applied avian conservation research across Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico region. The associate will participate in state and region-wide conservation conferences and workshops to identify applied research needs based on stakeholder objectives. The associate will also develop proposals and solicit extramural funding to address stakeholder priorities. In addition, the post-doctoral researcher will work closely with MAFES/CREC scientists, staff, and graduate students to build-out existing research and education programs to address a broader range of avian conservation issues across the Gulf of Mexico.

Minimum Qualifications:

A PhD degree in Wildlife Ecology, Conservation Biology, or a closely related field. Demonstrated familiarity with ecological and wildlife conservation principles.

Preferred Qualifications:

It is desired that the candidate has a background in applied avian ecology and conservation research; expertise and experience with quantitative approaches to data analysis; expertise in programming in R; demonstrated success working closely with management agencies on applied questions in wildlife conservation and the application of conservation decision making to natural resource management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The individual should be self-motivated, fit well in a multidisciplinary team environment, and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to acquire external support for conducting research and publishing in the peer-reviewed literature.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

There is an expectation the successful candidate will participate in fieldwork as necessary but will include stretches of office-based work. Some overnight travel will be required annually to participate in Gulf of Mexico conservation-oriented meetings and conferences as well as attend/present at regional, national and international scientific conferences.
