Summary of Expected Duties

The Senior Consultant – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) position will play a pivotal role in leading consulting engagements as an independent engineer or owner’s engineer related to battery energy storage projects. Ensures the delivery of high-quality services to our clients. Reports to the Executive Director – Energy Storage and works collaboratively with the team lead of E3’s energy storage practice and cross-functionally with E3’s solar practice team.

Primary Duties 

Project Leadership:

  • Oversee project timelines, budgets, and deliverables
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring their needs are understood and addressed
  • Lead project execution by ensuring professional interactions with clients and E3 team members
  • Ensure quality, consistency, and schedule deadlines of deliverables
  • Adhere to a solution-oriented mindset and ability to ‘think outside the box’ to offer alternative solutions to technical risks and problems with the ultimate goal being project development and financing

Technical Expertise:

  • Leverage your in-depth knowledge of BESS technologies, energy project development, and project finance requirements to develop innovative solutions for clients
  • Utilize your knowledge of major equipment used in BESS, including lithium-ion technology, thermal management systems, fire detection/suppression systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), Battery Management Systems (BMS), bi-directional inverters and DC converters, and associated Balance of Plant (BoP) equipment
  • Conduct technical assessments, feasibility studies, and performance evaluations of stand-alone and solar + storage battery storage systems, including an independent review of battery specifications, system designs, performance testing and commissioning procedures, and QA/QC documentation
  • Review third-party engineering reports, equipment technical datasheets, equipment supply and installation agreements, interconnection agreements, and financial models
  • Review and opine on feasibility studies, including site selection, layout creation, and optimization, offtake agreements, technical studies and risk assessments, CapEx, OpEx, and decommissioning cost estimates
  • Provide design support for stand-alone and solar + storage electrical design, including reviewing electrical packages, site general arrangements, and Use Case parameterization
  • Provide procurement support, including development of tender documents, RFPs, bid evaluation, EPC and supplier contract negotiation, and equipment recommendations and selection
  • Provide comprehensive owners engineering work, including construction design review, construction monitoring, commissioning, and acceptance-testing support. This may include coordinating construction and operational monitoring, including performing site visits and reviewing construction documents, progress reports, schedules, budgets, change orders, and invoices to ensure the project is built as designed to meet performance expectations.
  • Verify basic performance metrics from project data sets, and actual versus predicted performance of operating assets using available documentation and data
  • Review performance test data for coherence with modeled estimates and verify satisfaction of contractual obligations and financial model inputs
  • Have an understanding of relevant standards including UL9540, UL9540A, IEEE1547, UL1741 and NFPA855
  • Coordinate and attend E3 visits to project sites to verify construction progress or completion according to specified benchmarks, ensure the project site adheres to safety and environmental guidelines, validate as-built construction documents, and witness/verify performance testing against modeled assumptions
  • Stay aware of industry trends and emerging technologies in the field of energy storage

Client Engagement:

  • Cultivate and maintain strong client relationships through effective communication and collaboration
  • Identify opportunities for additional services and contribute to business development efforts
  • Provide expert advice to clients on BESS integration, optimization, and regulatory compliance
  • Remain flexible and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously

Team Collaboration:

  • Mentor and guide junior consultants and project team members
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of BESS solutions with overall project objectives
  • Foster a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous learning within the consulting team
  • Adhere to a Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) mindset
  • Work with a team, or independently, with strong communication and organizational skills

Analysis and Reporting:

  • Conduct thorough analyses of energy storage projects, including financial modeling and risk assessments
  • Prepare and present comprehensive technical reports, findings, and recommendations to clients and internal stakeholders
  • Prepare completion milestone certificates following verification of EPC contract requirements
  • Analyze and summarize possible causes of performance shortfalls and reliability events that lead to underproduction
  • Prepare statistical analysis of data, resource and net energy production forecasts, site design
  • Ensure the accuracy and reliability of data used in decision-making processes
  • Utilize the MS Office Suite using your strong analytical skills and experience, including Word and complicated Excel sheets

Working Relationships

This position reports directly to the Executive Director – Energy Storage.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Normal works hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additional time may be required during heavy workloads or to meet deadlines. 
  • Position is remote or located at the E3 office in Littleton, Colorado
  • Travel for work as needed (approximately 10-25 percent)
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for long periods of time, ability to communicate verbally, and in writing, and ability to handle long periods of screen time. Occasional work outdoors including but not limited to desert areas, long hours standing, climbing stairs, and ladders. 
  • Personal protective equipment is required for client site visits (including but not limited to steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.)

Education and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Master's degree is a plus.
  • Years of Experience: 10 years of relevant experience

Preferred:

  • Licenses/Certification: Although not required, a professional engineer’s license is a plus
  • Interest in participating in business development activities, whether through direct outreach with clients, creation of content such as blog posts, white papers, webinars or podcasts, and periodic attendance of industry conferences
  • Have a working knowledge of the generator interconnection process

Compensation

The initial annual compensation will range from $136,000 - $155,000 based on experience and qualifications.
