Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. These values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an anti-racist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, anti-racism and inclusion.

The McCrone Lab is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in viral phylogenetics (methods development and/or application). The lab conducts cutting-edge research in the areas of viral evolution and transmission dynamics. The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the field of genomic epidemiology well into the future. The growth of genomic datasets has outpaced the development of tractable approaches that can utilize these rich resources. Large sequence databases combined with rich metadata allow for detailed characterization of infectious disease dynamics to an unprecedented degree. Our goal is to use these resources to understand viral evolution and transmission at the level of individuals. Our mission is to better predict and limit the spread of viral pathogens.

At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, all employees are expected to demonstrate a commitment to our values of collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity, and respect.

This role will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely.

Responsibilities

The McCrone Lab in the Vaccines and Infectious Disease Division at the Fred Hutch is recruiting a postdoc to develop and apply novel computational approaches to characterize virus evolution and transmission in densely sampled, large, genomic datasets. The postdoc is expected to contribute to studies that explore virus evolution and transmission within individual hosts and between populations. They will develop computational methods that leverage the wealth of publicly available next generation sequence data to better anticipate respiratory virus evolution and vaccine escape. They will also have room to define, in discussion with Dr. McCrone, and pursue their own interests related to these core goals of the lab.

Level of autonomy: Independent work with limited oversight via regular check ins (i.e. weekly or semi-monthly as needed).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, collaborative team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A track record of excellent first author publication is strongly favored.
