About the Department:

To educate students to become lawyers, the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School has designated a curriculum that addresses three of the most pressing requirements of contemporary legal practice: facility with economic and quantitative methods, the increasing need for specialization, and a thorough grounding in fundamental skills of legal research, writing & analysis. George Mason University's Antonin Scalia Law School is located in Arlington, VA, just two miles from downtown Washington, D.C. Antonin Scalia Law School is a Top 50 law school. A relatively young law school, Scalia Law offers students an opportunity to pursue a JD, JM, or an LLM.

About the Position:

The Admissions Counselor is responsible for collaboratively planning and executing recruitment outreach and other forms of engagement with the Assistant Directors, in addition to implementing the communication strategy, using various platforms for outreach to prospective and admitted students. The Admissions Counselor assists the JD admissions application process including reviewing applications.

This position may have the opportunity to travel. This position only allows one remote day a week.

Responsibilities:

Recruitment and Yield

  • Proactively communicates and engages with prospective students and applicants;
  • Serves as the main point of contact for prospective students and applicants and guides them through the enrollment process in a respectful, courteous, and timely manner utilizing a variety of communication platforms;
  • Corresponds promptly and professionally with guests;
  • Proactively follows-up at specific points during the recruitment cycle to answer questions and assist applicants;
  • Assists with developing and implementing strategies for applicants to optimize yield; and
  • Assists the Assistant Directors with planning and execution of annual recruitment programming for open houses and workshops. Serves as a representative of Scalia Law and attends local and national recruitment events. Maintains the recruitment calendar on the internal calendar and Scalia Law's website.

Marketing & Events

  • Works with the Marketing and Communications Department and the Associate Dean to implement the communication strategy of the department;
  • Sends 2-4 emails a week to prospective students and applicant students. Maintains prospective students and admitted students communication database and updates database when necessary;
  • Assists with creating marketing emails for all admitted student events and prospective student events. Manages all Zoom links for prospective and admitted student events; and
  • Assists with admitted student and prospective student events including tracking reservations, confirmation and thank you emails, creating signs, and other items.

Purchasing & Travel Reimbursements

  • Purchases all recruiting materials for the Admissions Office;
  • Creates and orders recruitment items. Manages weekly budgeting reports of major purchases. Purchases Google Ads and Reddit Ads for the Admissions Office;
  • Manages weekly reports for the Associate Dean for Google Ads, Reddit Ads, and communication database;
  • Registers the Admissions Office for all fall and spring recruitment travel. Handles majority of eVa items for admitted student events. Manages the Scalia Law School Travel Reimbursement Program for admitted students. Coordinates contracts with local hotels to ensure rooms are reserved for students and students are provided information about hotel rooms;
  • Processes students travel reimbursements; and
  • Provides weekly reports regarding travel reimbursements to Associate Dean. 

Reading and Selection

  • Reviews applications to Scalia Law School and render decisions; and
  • Reads up to 25-50 applications a week.

Other related duties as assigned that help the department achieve its objectives and goals and/or support the mission of the Law School.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in higher education and/or customer service;
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite and computer databases;
  • Expertise in a variety of tasks and functions related to new student recruitment, event planning, and admission counseling in higher education;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, highly motivated and detail-oriented, and have the ability to interact with persons at all skills;
  • Demonstrated effective decision-making skills in the absence of direct supervision;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills;
  • Ability to independently manage and complete work assignments without close supervision; and
  • Valid driver's license; must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with admissions, student recruitment, and/or enrollment management;
  • Experience with ACES2 or Banner;
  • Knowledge of law school curriculum and missions; and
  • Ability to think critically to provide solutions to difficult problems and create value.
