Job Description

Provides system support for all UNIX/LINUX based software by implementing, monitoring and maintaining systems and application software running under UNIX/LINUX operating systems to ensure compliance with appropriate accessibility and security standards and Boston College best practices. Collaborates with Applications Services, Architecture Services, Network Services and IT Security teams to enhance, maintain and improve the UNIX/LINUX platform that serves as the foundation for many other ITS applications. This group ensures that all UNIX/LINUX and virtualization systems are properly monitored, maintained and secured to ensure that this specialized platform operates at peak performance to support other ITS applications.

Must be able to troubleshoot and resolve issues with UNIX/LINUX operating systems, specific applications, databases, scripting and network and storage issues. Resolves access issues to ensure that users have privileges at the correct level. May be called upon to handle problems that arise during the installation and maintenance of applications. Serves as the first point of contact for any problems prior to vendor involvement. 

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges: 

Senior UNIX/LINUX Systems Administrator: A minimum of five years in a UNIX/LINUX environment including virtualization experience. Hiring ranges up to 126k.

UNIX/LINUX Systems Administrator: A minimum of three years in a UNIX/LINUX environment. 

Hiring ranges up to 108k

Associate UNIX/LINUX Systems Administrator: A minimum of two years in a UNIX/LINUX environment. Hiring ranges from up to 89k

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science or closely related Information Technology field.
  • Experience working with virtualization technologies such as server virtualization, desktop virtualization, Citrix, VMware or MS Hyper-V. 
  • Experience working with Shell scripting or working with PERL.
  • Prior experience with one of the following: VMware, vSphere, Esxi Host virtualization software, IBM LPARS (logical partitioning) and VIO systems (performance monitoring systems).
  • Experience with performance monitoring, virtualization analysis and consolidation activities.
  • Ability to create and manage technical documentation.
  • Experience planning and executing disaster recovery and business continuity improvements.
  • Experience with data center operations to include server management.
  • Experience planning and executing client server architecture implementations.
  • Knowledge of enterprise storage solutions.
  • Experience with networking technologies such as routers and switches.
  • Experience with automation technologies such as BladeLogic,Syxsense, Ansible, Bitbucket and Jenkins a plus.
  • Experience working with blade and rack mount server hardware such as hardware components (CPU and memory).
