Marine Program Assistant Educator - Sea Stars

Assist with all programs and projects associated with the Marine Program. Conduct various indoor and outdoor marine educational experiences both on and off the Northport (Sea Stars Marine Camp) locations. Assistant Educators will be responsible for learning and conducting all outreach programs at other facilities (schools, other camps, libraries, daycares, etc.). This position will have a flexible schedule and may include weekend or early evening hours.

This seasonal position will participate as a marine educator for children and adults. The educator will also assist with a marine science summer camp for children ages 6-14, when needed. This will include leading children through various activities both indoors and outdoors, including the classroom/building, salt marsh, beach activities, and arts and crafts. The Assistant Educator may also lead tours at Asharoken Beach, Northport to visiting groups as well as lead courses and labs individually and prepare and breakdown daily activities and assigned programs. Assistant Educators will be responsible for preparation before programs and clean-up after programs including cleaning and care of the facility, animals, and/or aquaria. All associated tasks related to camp are possible including supervision of children, paperwork and creating and teaching a marine lesson.

Additionally, the seasonal educator may assist in other local Western Suffolk Marine Program projects including water quality and stormwater, but not limited to.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in biological or related sciences and at least 1 year experience relevant to the role of the position or High School Diploma and 2 years volunteer or work experience;
  • Experience with working with children.
  • Ability to learn and lead educational experiences and activities.
  • Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives.
  • Ability to supervise a group of up to 30 children
  • Ability to work with children.
  • Ability to understand and implement written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors performing various types of educational and physical activities.
  • Ability to learn marine science and natural science subject matter.
  • Ability to work with and touch live animals (marine organisms, fish, reptiles, etc.).
  • Ability to handle health and safety issues and/or emergency situations;
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of job, such as light hiking expeditions to the bay beach seining; off camp trips to the Aquarium and Yankee III voyage.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position;
  • Ability to pass a motor vehicle screening
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required;
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Desire to work with children.
  • Basic marine biology, environmental or education background/aquarium and/or animal care experience.
  • Current CPR/AED and/or First Aid certification or higher, or equivalent.
  • Lifeguard Certifications.

Program Responsibilities:

Program Assessment – 0 %

Program Development – 5 %

  • Assist Camp Director with the development of learning materials, such as posters, signs, displays for lessons.

Program Delivery – 65 %

  • The Assistant Educator will lead and assist with various marine and environmental science educational programs for children-Adults. This will include leading children through various activities both indoors and outdoors during games, learning activities, educational programming, crafts, nature walks on and off-site.
  • Aid in educational programming by helping Camp Director with their lessons.
  • Prior to that day’s planned lesson, become comfortable with and educated on lesson topics.
  • Additionally, understand fully the following day’s agenda and scheduled programs.
  • Understand fully how to implement the following day’s program schedule.
  • Understand fully how to head lead the following day’s activities.

Program Evaluation – 5%

  • Provide Camp Director with positive and negative constructive feedback regarding your perceived success of program activities, crafts and lessons.

Applied Research – 0 %

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction – 0 %

Management – 0 %

  • Assist Camp Director with leading Counselors and CIT participants.
  • Supervision of campers.
  • At Asharoken Beach, the Counselor will closely monitor children at all times.
  • Be sure to evaluate your own success in your position and consider any changes you or the Camp Direction deem necessary or beneficial to your performance.

Coordination/Operation – 10 %

  • Assist Camp Director with administrative duties.
  • Set-up and maintain fish tank, including cleaning of tanks and filters.
  • Assistant Educators are responsible for preparation before programming and clean-up after programs including cleaning after crafts and various activities.
  • Assistant Educators are responsible for facility maintenance and care including cleaning bathrooms, sweeping floors, maintaining equipment when needed at camp.
  • At Asharoken Beach, the Assistant Educator will help lead children on and off the bus, through lunch, during seining, and will remain in the water during swimming activities if needed.
  • Be present and participate in daily discussions during morning staff meetings at Fuchs (Sea Stars Marine Camp).

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
