California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of History. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona, and 41% of new students were transfers in Fall 2022. 57% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 53% Latinx, 22% Asian, 14% White, 3% Black, 2% International, 4% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

Department of History: The Department of History at Cal Poly Pomona offers both a B.A. and an M.A. degree in history as well as courses that meet the campus’s general education requirements. The Department offers a global history emphasis that, in line with the mission of the university, allows students to deepen their understanding of the past and its meaning on both a particular and a global scale. The department provides a solid grounding for students in historical methods and historiography, as well as the latest developments in digital history. All student majors are responsible for researching and writing an original senior thesis based on primary and secondary sources. The curriculum includes a wide range of courses organized both geographically and thematically. The Position: The Department of History in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) seeks a strong teacher-scholar with expertise in the area of Chinese history at the rank of Assistant Professor with appointment effective Fall 2024. Duties in this position include teaching Chinese history, East Asian history, the World Civilization surveys (ancient world to 1500 and 1500 to the present), and upper-division courses in areas of interest; maintaining an active research agenda; and service to various levels of the university and the related community.
