Michael Baker International is seeking an on-site Permit/Construction Inspector to join our team. The Permit/Construction Inspector will be assigned to the NYSDOT local Maintenance Residency offices in western Orange County, located in Middletown, New York. Under the guidance of Senior Project Managers and Engineers, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects for New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) reviewing highway work permits and inspecting permit construction work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role, you will support New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) in the review and approval of highway work permits required for work performed within the right of way and will ensure that the finished projects, meet the standards and policies of public safety, highway laws and regulations. Under the direction of the Permit Engineer, the duties include reviewing permit application plans to ensure design is according to sound engineering principles and NYSDOT policies and standards. Also review permit design plans for completeness and conduct field construction inspection of permit work in accordance with approved plans.

Permit applications are generally submitted by developers, utility companies, municipalities, residents, and others desiring to conduct activity within the right of way. The focus of the Permit/Construction Inspection position will involve review of permit plans and field inspections. Work performed on any part of the state highway system, its properties or right of way, requires obtaining a permit. Typical examples of this work include permanent or temporary driveway installations and related improvements, drainage work, slope work, sign installations, erecting banners across a state highway, land development, landscaping and plantings, and the various activities of utilities in maintaining and installing lines and equipment on the right of way. 

The applicant should have construction inspection experience with utilities, civil site layout, grading, water, wastewater, stormwater and other infrastructure facilities. The successful candidate should have experience working with NYSDOT and area counties as well as local municipalities, state agencies, developers, landowners, utility companies, and project consultants. Experience related to design plan review include the following:

  • NYSDOT standards and specifications and permit requirements 
  • Utility design, including municipal water and sanitary sewer service plans and profiles.
  • Grading and erosion control plans.
  • Site design and layout of vehicular and pedestrian circulation, parking, and loading.
  • Highway design, including street and sidewalk plans and profiles.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • NICET II Certification 
  • 2+ years work experience as NICET II Inspector
  • Other safety and inspection certifications preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with NYSDOT projects and permit application process preferred.
  • Self-starter who can work independently and with team members.

COMPENSATION

The approximate compensation range for this position is $34.60 to $38.00 per hour. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
