The Vice President, Chief Clinical Data Officer reports to the SVP, Chief Data and Analytics Officer. The VP, Chief Clinical Data Officer will lead a team of data scientists, data architects, clinical informaticists and clinical analysts who perform data abstraction, interpretation and reporting on quality measures across the enterprise and lead HMH in the use of healthcare analytics for quality improvement, public reporting, population health management and predictive modeling. The VP, Chief Clinical Data Officer will work in a highly collaborative fashion with Hospital Presidents, CMOs, Department Chairs, the HMH executive team, Quality, Population Health and the Physician Enterprise.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Vice President, Chief Clinical Data Officer at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Serves the network's strategic and quality goals by developing advanced analytic and predictive modeling techniques to produce better patient outcomes, continual quality improvement and enhanced clinical research capability.
  • Is system's expert on all forms of public reporting, benchmarking and pay for performance.
  • Guides system choice of annual quality priorities based on internal performance data and market analysis.
  • Leads quality data analytics team to transition from manual data collection and reporting to accessible, electronic tools.
  • Leads development of Epic / Clarity / Slicer Dicer analytic function and strategy.
  • Analyzes large data sets to guide quality and disease specific interventions.
  • Provides data service to future clinical researchers and faculty of medical school for hypothesis - generating analysis and IRB-approved research.
  • Leadership:
  • Provide leadership for utilization and governance of clinical data operations and clinical analytics for the HMH network.
  • Develop a framework to navigate ethical concerns around machine learning and ways to address them (including but not limited to establishing a sound governance strategy, standards for data quality and integrity, and a responsible AI framework.
  • Strategize, lead, and operationalize analytics center(s) of excellence (including direct/indirect reports and/or matrix reporting lines) as service model to HMH analytics consumer groups
  • Accountable to the Chief Medical Officer to provide analytics strategy and to support HMH in achieving the best possible quality outcomes.
  • Develop an analytics center of excellence in support of the Chief Medical Officer's goals and objectives.
  • Organize clinical analytics teams to align with HMH¿s implementation of clinical care transformation efforts and shifts within value-based, highly reliable, innovative care models.
  • Communicate data findings, deliver storyboards, and foster data-driven culture throughout the network
  • Expand expertise of analytics teams to include deep understanding of data flows, purpose, and intended use and utilization of clinical data, statistical analysis, modeling, and mining.
  • Communicate key capabilities of the analytics environment and the value of insight-driven decision making. Provides overall socialization and evangelism of data-driven decision making through analytics tools and data platforms.
  • Develop and champion a continuous learning environment across the enterprise analytics community (including direct/indirect reports and/or matrix reporting lines).
  • Strategy:
  • Design and operationalize analytics strategies to access value-based payment models, physician alignment, home-based care models, and other procedure-based and condition-based care episodes in coordination with the Chief Medical Officer and the SVP, Chief Data and Analytics Officer.
  • Keep abreast of evolving healthcare industry and government actions as it pertains to clinical data flow and operations in regulatory compliance, hospital rating and ranking systems, payment models, risk adjustment methods, patient safety, quality, outcomes, and peer benchmarking.
  • Data Operations:
  • Ensure enterprise-wide governance-delegated strategy is executed, tracked, and monitored.
  • Develop and operationalize appropriate governance, controls, and data management best practices - develop SOPs for monitoring data quality across clinical data sources.
  • Apply and/or develop advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories, and concepts to identify meaningful patterns in data in sometimes ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Set standards for code quality and delivery, evaluate tools for implementation, and continuously improve the data science pipeline; collaborate with product owners, data scientists, machine learning engineers, and other data professionals to ensure these standards are met.
  • Set and manage high professional standards for the analytics team - including alignment to clinical and business stakeholders, execution of meaningful insights and storytelling, and pride and passion for team accomplishments.
  • Foster an environment where analytics team members educate and inform data consumers about relevant data modeling, transformations, and methods that are inside analytics and insight story boards.
  • Support an agile approach to projects and customer needs.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • MD, PhD, MS or equivalent, or fellowship in biostatistics, epidemiology or health services.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years experience in a senior-level quality analytics program at a major academic medical center.
  • Proven track record for success in leading high-performance analytics teams and building best-in-class capabilities at the network / enterprise level.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the development of cutting-edge data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning products.
  • Must possess strong conceptual and analytical skills, as well as demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including communication at the executive level.
  • Strong leadership/influencing skills are required with the ability to work effectively within a system and influence others to achieve results.
  • Experience working across organizational boundaries, particularly forming strong executive partnership across multiple business units.
  • Experience demonstrating to stakeholders how analytics can be implemented to maximize business benefits; provide strategic consulting, needs assessment, scoping of project, and clearly communicate findings, recommendations, and explain models.
  • Knowledge of machine learning frameworks, such as sklearn or TensorFlow, and experience developing machine learning models, such as convolution neural networks, recurrent neural networks, or transformers.
  • Strong working knowledge of basic and Bayesian statistical concepts such as correlation, linear regression, optimization, and how they can be applied to algorithm development.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent project management, organization, analysis, and problem-solving skills required.
  • Must possess demonstrated experience working with and negotiating with external vendors.
  • Must be able to operate effectively in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
  • Embrace and lead change effectively and cultivate an environment of data driven thinking, innovation, experimentation, rigor and continuous improvement.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in multiple data systems, particularly Epic Clarity, Slicer Dicer and Chronicles.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in guiding quality analytics in a major academic medical center.
  • Proficient in multiple data systems and statistics.
  • Experience with Google Workplace productivity suite.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundations.
