Position Function:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Post-doctoral Associate specializing in entomologal collections research, insect ecology, conservation biology, or museum studies to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in securing funding for research projects related to the Mississippi Entomological Museum, as well as supporting outreach initiatives aimed at bringing awareness about invasive species, conservation of native ecosystems, and the importance of research collections to the public.

Salary Grade: UC

Department Profile:

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology pursues an academic research and service mission within the traditions of Land-Grant Universities. The Department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and currently advises approximately 500 undergraduate and 50 graduate students.

Area of Specialization:

Grant Writing for Entomological Museum Research and Outreach

Anticipated Appointment Date:

January 1, 2024. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Conduct in-depth research to identify suitable grant opportunities for entomological research and museum projects.

2. Write and submit grant proposals, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and objectives.

3. Collaborate with museum staff to gather necessary information and data for grant applications.

4. Work with our staff to manage the grant application process, including budgeting, timeline development, and compliance with funding guidelines.

5. Monitor and track progress of grant applications, providing regular updates to the relevant stakeholders.

6. Assist in the development of outreach programs and initiatives to engage the community and promote entomological education.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in Entomology, Biology, Conservation, Ecology or a related field.

2. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

4. Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of research methodologies and museum operations.

2. Track record of successful grant writing and securing funding for research projects.

1. Expertise in Entomology: A strong background and advanced knowledge in the field of entomology, including taxonomy, ecology, and conservation of insects.

3. Funding Landscape: Familiarity with funding sources, both governmental and private, that support entomological research and museum initiatives.

4. Research Methodologies: Knowledge of research methodologies relevant to entomological studies, including specimen collection, preservation, and analysis.

5. Museum Operations: Understanding of the operations and management of entomological museums, including curation and conservation of specimen collections.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Requires limited lifting of files, records, and insect drawers.
  • Fieldwork requires ability to drive and includes exposure to the outdoors and associated unpredictable weather.
  • Frequent, external imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position.
  • Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
  • Travel to various events and field sites may be necessary with some overnight stays required on occasion.
