Director, Business Minor

Position Summary

The Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University invites applicants for the inaugural Director, Business Minor - an

Academic Specialist-Curriculum (12-month, 100% time, continuing-term) in Undergraduate Academic Services (UAS). The director

reports to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Academic Operations and Student Experience and will provide leadership and serve

as the spokesperson for the minor, guiding its curricular, operational, and student success.

In Fall 2021, the Broad College launched the business minor, offering 6 courses open to all MSU undergraduates not pursuing a

Broad College major. The business minor currently serves 1551 minor declared students.

The successful candidate will engage in the following key responsibilities:

Curriculum Development

  • Facilitate and partner with faculty on the development of an innovative, state-of-the-art program and curriculum, including course re-development to leverage relevant online learning technologies, enhance the online experience, and create consistency to serve larger numbers of learners.
  • Collaborate with business minor faculty and coordinate activities to ensure the program's curriculum remains up-to-date and relevant to the needs of constituents.
  • Establish and leverage a close partnership with the Broad College Learning Technology and Development team and engage outside vendors as needed.

Program Management

  • Manage course enrollment, ensuring accurate listings, availability, and scheduling.
  • Address enrollment-related inquiries and resolve issues related to waitlists, add/drop procedures, and course conflicts.
  • Analyze enrollment data to anticipate demand for specific courses and recommend adjustments to academic units to course scheduling and capacity as needed.
  • Monitor program performance and recommend improvements based on feedback, strategic initiatives, and industry trends.
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to enhance the program's reputation.
  • Manage website content and collateral.
  • Develop and execute promotional strategies.
  • Represent the program at academic advising, department, college and university level meetings.

Academic Advising & Student Success

  • Assist students in understanding course prerequisites, requirements, and elective options, helping them make informed decisions about their course selections.
  • Collaborate with the academic advisors in Undergraduate Academic Services (UAS) Broad College, University Advising in Undergraduate Education, and other partner colleges.
  • Monitor student progress and address academic concerns.
  • Execute degree clearance.

Future Initiatives & Development

  • Lead new academic initiatives supporting growth, strategic academic direction, and expansion to new markets; leverage new University initiatives such as undergraduate certificates, badges, and some-college, no-degree.
  • Engage in fundraising and donor identification to secure program sustainability.

The position will interface regularly with faculty teaching business minor courses and academic professionals throughout the College

and across campus.

The Broad College and UAS supports and encourages a flex schedule which incorporates day/time flexibility as well as work from

home opportunities. Flex schedules are reviewed each semester and are expected to be predictable and reliable.

The minimum salary for this position is $85,000. Consideration will be given for years of curriculum development experience,

program management, and assessment experience. Every effort will be made to provide a competitive salary that is equitable

amongst Broad undergraduate facing professionals.

Minimum Requirements

Well prepared candidates will demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive responsibility in a college/university setting supporting and/or teaching undergraduate students.
  • Program development, execution, and assessment.
  • Curriculum development.
  • Experience supporting faculty in the development of course pedagogy to maximize learning outcomes.
  • Must be able to interpret and implement academic policies and procedures; demonstrated competency in the use of current technology.
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written), organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills required.
  • Evidence of contributions to cross-cultural understanding/sensitivity and commitment to diversity.
  • Evidence of successful & maintained positive collaborations with multiple stakeholders around issues related to advising and student success.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with MSU’s software and advising systems (Campus Solutions, ESAF, D2L, and Degree Clearance).
  • Show capacity, knowledge, and/or willingness to attract resources.
  • Facilitation and presentation experience.
  • Commitment to helping others, tolerance for ambiguity, and sense of perspective.
  • High personal accountability.
