Location & Division

The ImmunoDiagnostics Division (IDD) develops, manufactures, and markets complete blood test systems to support the clinical diagnosis and follow-up of allergy and autoimmune diseases. The allergy and autoimmunity product lines operate on a common automated instrument platform, Phadia Laboratory Systems, which supports both productivity and cost efficiencies in clinical laboratories around the world. This position is located at our office in Portage, MI.

The Systems Engineer's impact

The Systems Engineer provides exceptional support as part of our small but mighty Systems Engineering team! We are focused on highly sophisticated and integrated systems within hospitals and commercial reference laboratories. In this role, you support our customers, third-party collaborators, and colleagues with instrumentation, software, middleware, network integration, and other Information Technology (IT) needs. Your ideas and proposals for new software, hardware, configurations, tools, processes, security requirements, and solutions are valued and will impact our continuous efforts to improve and protect the user experience.

What our Systems Engineers do

We support system software users. We validate and test software in the final stages before wide release, documenting processes and drafting procedures for implementation. We develop software solutions and automation tools that aid with installation, maintenance, diagnostics, and security of systems and their integrations.

We uphold system standardization while accommodating customer needs, providing a secure IT environment without compromising system functionality or our support for our products and our customers. We evaluate and propose improvements for hardware, software, cybersecurity requirements, and networking solutions. We collaborate on risk and security assessment processes.

We implement and complete network/system architecture for current and future Phadia Systems. We deploy software and upgrades, support hardware installation, and assist with laboratory workflow through integration at customer sites. We support new implementations of Laboratory Information System (LIS) interfaces, remote system monitoring solutions, and Total Laboratory Automation (TLA) system integrations.

We interact and integrate with many multi-functional teams to improve system performance through product support and continued process and procedural improvements. We provide training, support, and instructions. We host technical presentations for external IT/LIS personnel, laboratory Directors/Managers, Information Security (IS) teams, and sales representatives.

We advance our skills with opportunities to focus our individual growth toward programming, networking, cybersecurity, or project management.

Education

Possess an Associate or a Bachelor of Science degree from a Technical or an Engineering field in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or similar or instead demonstrate an equivalent combination of skills and experience.

Experience

Proficiency with Windows Operating Systems, knowledge of scripting including PowerShell, and experience with SQL is expected. Competency in software programming languages, such as C, C#, C++, .NET, Java, or Python, and familiarity with software development processes are advantageous.

Excellence in communication, delivering exceptional customer service, technical support, and professional presentations, whether in-person or remotely, is essential.

Dependability as a teammate accustomed to sharing workloads and collaborating on large tasks and projects, with both internal and external teams, is crucial.

Knowledge of computer hardware and components, including experience building computers, is preferred. Understanding of systems integration technology, information security, and product life cycles is vital.

Experience with networking and cybersecurity, having knowledge about related industry standards, is preferred. Familiarity with TCP/IP, RS232, SSH, and security appliances such as Cisco and Juniper firewalls is helpful.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Excellent judgment and organizational skills to set work priorities, handle multiple projects, be proactive, and think long-term. Able to operate autonomously and self-start in a fast-paced environment.

Must be an analytical problem solver with good engineering competence. Process-minded with excellent attention to detail. Able to quickly adapt to change with positive and constructive feedback. Effective communicator with competent documentation skills.

Willing to travel up to 40% (overnight), in some cases with little notice, via automobile or airplane. Flexible with last-minute schedule changes, which may occur to ensure customer satisfaction. Ability to obtain and possess a valid driver's license with a clean Motor Vehicle Report. Willing and able to drive a vehicle for up to 4-5 hours at a time and fly via commercial air travel. Able to stand continuously for up to two hours. Able to lift 75 pounds and carry 50 pounds for at least 100 feet.

Maintain Vendor Credentialing for access to customer locations and instrumentation which may require certain vaccinations and/or medical screening be kept up to date. Adhere to OHS policies and procedures and ensure a safe and healthy workplace environment. Some exposure to biohazards is a possibility during instrument service activities, as these instruments are used in biohazard environments and encounter human bodily fluids. Biohazard training, safety equipment, and following SOPs will minimize exposure.
